Replaced Battery and Blower Motor

I have had the 80 240D for 5 Yrs and 8 Mo`s, got it from the original owners.
I have no idea how old the battery was, but she finally gave up the ghost.
never had a problem or indication she was getting tired, but couple weeks back,
9-24 started the engine in the morning, and she didn`t have the same old
zip, but did kick the engine to life.

Then the next morning it was rrr...rrr...rrr... check voltage and showed 10.53V.
Put it on the charger out in the shop, and later in the evening it stilled showed 10.53V.
with my high tech HF free DVM.

So took the battery and headed down to Walmart in the old Ford PU
and asked for a group 49. The one they have is a
Group size H8
Part# Maxx H8
900 CCA
1000 cranking amps at 32Deg.
Made by Johnson Controls.
Cost $131.87.

Dang those Batteries are heavy.

Turned the key and it was R..RUMPH Klata Klata Klata.
The sounds of that raw unleashed OM616 power.

Checked the out put of the Alternator...between 13.99 and 14.00V
so we are good for the up coming winter. Good think this happened in the Garage.

Driving out here in the Boonies of Nevada, it like driving in a dark hole at night.
I did notice the Head Lights are actually brighter now.


Blower Motor.

When we got the car I noticed the Blower Switch didn`t have that distinct click, probably 30 yrs of use.
But it always worked ok. Have a couple PNP spares just incase.

About 6 months back started have some issues with the not coming on, and wiggle the switch and she came on.
Would work ok, stop to go shopping, and would not work, or would, then quit etc...
Finally it just quit.

So then summer arrived and procrastinated about diving into the Dash to replace the Switch.

Now we are into Fall, and had a couple storms blow in from Calif, (about 1/10 inch) and the temp dropped enough the need for heat started becoming important.

But as long as the air came in from the vents.. ok we had enough heat.

Saturday I finally dove in, and started with the easy part, check the Blower
to see if jumping it would make it work.
Dropped the under dash knee panel, pulled the plug. I cut of a foot of wire
with the plug from a Junker at PNP, and used this with my Drill Battery.
Damn thing was dead as a Door Nail. (Blower)

Grabbed one of my PNP spares, put power to it and it lifted me off the ground. so a good one for sure.

Stuck it in, turned on the switch and I have air.
So we are ready now for winter.

Always start with the easy things first.
I didn`t think it was the Blower as I did replace it when we got the car. The
Blower was inop, and putting pwr to it is was dead also.
The replacement was a PNP one, but blew good, so we got 5yrs out of it for
the $25 PNP charges, no too bad. A new one is $400 from MB and a Euro $100.

There is a thread from a couple yrs back, where a Volvo Bosch motor will replace the MB Bosch one.

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power
3) Not nearly enough power!! 240D w/auto

Anyone that thinks a 240D is slow drives too fast.

Another wise thing to do, when replacing the battery which makes a great improvement in cold starts....Is to replace the battery cables with 2 gauge cables, universal cables are available for very cheap at any local auto zoo....
