If you painted it, it would sell quicker and easier but you would lose money. If you don't, you'll need to wait until you find a person who is committed and they'll probably try to talk you down so that they can justify the paint job themselves.

The 190D 2.2L is very sought after for its excellent fuel economy. I return 42 mpg average on the highway. It's also a very agile chassis. Also, compared to the 2.0 OM601, the 2.2L is rare with only 10,000 units sold in the US. It was just a US car and for only 2 years.

I really love my car except I do wish it was more powerful sometimes. Having the overdrive gear is very nice for me on the highway.

I would prefer a mechanically sound car that has not recently been painted because I can diagnose mechanical issues but am always suspicious that the new paint is simply designed to cover things like paint.

My bodyshop friend can quickly make a car look good. It takes much more time and effort to make it look good for a long time. He told me that my SD has to come down to the metal because the paint is cracked and the cracks will soon show up in the new paint job.

Seems the right thing to do is wait for one of our type, who understands the value of the platform and full-disclosure-paint. Otherwise, you'll just have to find a shop that'll let you do the masking yourself, then do a quick cheap spray... but most of us wouldn't do that to one of our rides.

A paint job that would add equity would exceed the value of the car.

I'm interested in the car to fly out and buy it but want to see it first

Pics?

Nada puts low retail at $3,600... but that tends to be a pipe dream. Bad paint would knock that quite a bit... but LA has plenty of places that'll do a urethane spray for $400... Not one I'd care to grow old with, but one that would sell. Heck, these guys will do it for $295.

So long as you sell it before the next rain shower...

A poor recent repaint job takes value away from a car as it is more work to strip and make it right that what it takes to do a good 1st time repaint..

Exactly. Just for comparison:

Mercedes Benz 190 Series | eBay

Today I was in Barnes & Noble and picked up an "Old Car Price Guide". They listed a 190DT in primo condition as being worth $18K. Right, find a buyer.

Hey MM prices w123's in the high 20,000's.....So why not try to sell one for 18k I am amazed how fast the w123's went from being dirt cheap to more cash then a new Honda...Turns out that saying, people have more money then brains...is never truer then in today's world...

The listed 190 is a 2.5, not a 2.2... Big difference... And the turbo 190 is a rare bird... Also apples and oranges to the sluggish sipper 2.2 5speed...

If I was retired and had the time, I would paint it myself using the roller method.

Rickwrench, Alfa GTV, Falcon Squire, Corvair

The advantage of this method is that you don't need any special skills or tools or paint booth, and you can paint one panel at a time.

Was about to link that site... but yea, ridiculous number of hours to get a decent finish. First found it through this guy who did his VW van...

Not sure I'd have the patience, but if you have the spare time, and take lots of pictures to show you aren't hiding anything...

I did the roller method on a 123 and it's been pretty good for about three years now. It's no show car, but it is serviceable and cheap.

You still need to fix the dents no matter what method you use to paint. Rolling then buffing any imperfections out of the paint is a lot of work.
