I Haven't Abandoned Y'all

You may not see me much for the next couple of months. I'm swapping a 347 small block Ford into my buddy's 200 series Volvo wagon so I won't be doing much Diesel stuff. The car already has a 5.0 SBF but he wants MORE POWER!! (sound familiar?)

I may lurk a bit but my head is in Otto-cycle engines for a while. You guys have fun!

Dan

If you guys want non-Diesel pics -

1) Current 5.0

2) the car as is

3) the 347 awaiting installation. It from BluePrint and dynos at 443 HP - no foolin'.

That's pretty epic. What sorts of drivetrain upgrades has he had to make? I would assume that the stock driveshaft/rear end aren't built to take 443 HP?

I seem to recall that the rear end in those cars is a Dana 30... do they make higher-performance versions of those?

The build thread is on Bangshift. Lurkers welcome if you don't want to sign up.

He drives it pretty gently for what it is. No burnouts, etc. It MIGHT get a little LSR use at some point but mostly he wants to hold it and love it gently. Besides, with this HP the tires are the "fuse" - they'll just go up in smoke before anything serious breaks. We are doing an SFI flywheel and scattershield in case the tires put up less of a fight than we anticipate and the RPMs climb too high. The trans is a World Class T5 and I think the rear is stock. If we have difficulty we'll switch to a TKO or similar and (I'm thinking) a Ford 8.8 - tough diff and not too pricey. The wagon is wide enough that I think we can get a rear with appropriate width at PnP.

347 Is In The Hole

Some of youse guys were interested so here's a few pics of today's efforts.

1) Engine in place.
2) Same shot from the mezzanine, magazine-style.
3) Space for right header (a bit tight)
4) Space for left header (also snug)

Enjoy! (Senor Luna, why you change your name?)

A couple of pics from this project. I've been working with MXFrank on here to get a radiator that provides as much cooling as possible and this is the radiator that arrived today.

I reworked the core support a bit and moved the condenser forward a bit but it now fits in the hole. We'll test-fit the hood tomorrow as I'm a bit worried about the height but hopefully it'll clear. If not we'll send it back for Plan B.

Thought some of you might enjoy a peek at one of the many brackets and do-dads I've made for this build. For me, this is the fun part - making things fit and remain safe for the duration of the build.

1) Here's a little bracket to hold the fill line from the expansion/fill tank to the radiator. It was uncomfortably close to the PS pump pulley and being a fuss budget I made a bracket instead of lashing down with a tie wrap. There were no studs to secure it to so I made a stud on the side of the battery tray brace and set a Rivnut into the frame to hold the bottom.

2) With the hose (above) secured I could fab up the lower radiator hose. The rad has a 1.25" outlet and the water pump is 1.75". The Mustang hose (makes up the top part of the finished hose) has a step down to 1.5" but I needed one more step. I found a hose at Advance (they know me and will let me dig around in the back area) that has a 1.5 to 1.25 step as you'll see it in the pic. The final piece of the puzzle came together at our local radiator shop (yes, we have one) when they turned up a brass 1.5" to 1.5" connector. A few hose clamps and I was home free.

Tech tip: A chop saw like you use for wood projects works great to cut hose. It leaves a nice square cut but take it SLOWLY so it doesn't pull the hose out of your hand.

What a nice pristine looking 245! You rarely see them this nice even here in Sweden. Fantastic project, too!
