PIC of my "new" 300TD
I washed the car and cleaned the engine today- it's running like stink and smells like diesel and I LOVE it!

Nice Car! I haven't seen that color in a TD. Is it original?

Thanks much, I'm really in love with it. I pulled up the carpets and took a look underneath and was pleasantly surprised to find everything pretty sound. Passenger side was of course a little worse but no floorpan rust at all. I did adjust the throttle linkage this morning but wasn't really sure I made a difference.
Two things: should I disconnect the EGR on my car and where, exactl, is the monovalve? I suspect the monovalve is bad because on the way home I had no heat at highway speed but gobs a idle and around time. ?: will I get A/C at highway speed with a bad monovalve? I'm wondering if I can wait to tackle the monovalve until later this summer... -shawn |

The monovalve is just a heater valve that controls the flow of coolant to the climate control systems. I would probably fix it soon because it isn't too expensive (around $30), it's really easy to do, and I think that proper coolant flow is important to keeping the temp. of the engine constant. Oh, and it will really suck to have uncontrollable heat (or lack thereof).

Oh, I forgot to mention that I also love that color. Euro headlights would look great and take away the odd mismatch of your paint color and the yellow from the fog lights.

Where can I find the monovalve and should I disable the EGR? Actually, I find it pretty peppy most of the time- the only time it seems a little pokey is re-accelerating coming out of a turn.

You can find the monovalve in the FastLane online catalog. With regards to the EGR, I would disable it to keep all the exhaust crap out of the intake.

Shawnster:
I found my EGR forward of the air filter housing and about even with the front of the valve cover on the engine. Kind of tucked in between the two and up within easy reach. Mine is a grey market car however and might difer from yours. Pop the hose off it and put a screw into the end of the hose and plug the metal valve that the hose was on. I just duct taped it because I didn't know what I was doing. Still holding one year later. I want to encourage you in the fact that these are simply mechanical and will respond to therapy. It is amazing to see them respond Don't forget that ALDA adjustment. Sounds hard but all you do is cut away the protective cover, loosen the lock nut and adjust the bolt in 1/4 turns. Test drive after every 1/4 turn. As with most things, there are comprehensive posts on these subjects. Just do the search, print out the sheet and go get oil on it Don

One note on the monovalve. If the plastic housing on the monovalve is not cracked you can easily buy a new "insert" to fix it as opposed to replacing the whole thing. The insert (I think it may also be referred to as a cartridge) is much cheaper than the whole monovalve. I think the $30 quoted is for the cartridge. Fastlane has them. By the way, it's located on the firewall between the back of the engine and the battery. It has two heater hoses attached to it and a small wire plug attached on the top. It's a bit of a pain to remove but not too bad. You should be able to do the whole job in less than an hour.

Alex,
Are you kidding?! These cars look MUCH better with the US spec headlights. I love the twin round headlight/fog light combo on these cars. Well, I've seen others on this board talk about replacing the US with the Euro spec lights, so I know some think it looks better. Not me.

I agree, I like the US-spec lights too. Just a matter of personal taste...
Sorry Shawnster...can't help you with the monovalve or the EGR...my 79 300 SD doesn't have either one...don't know much about them. Do a search on each of them and I'm sure you'll turn up tons of info. Great looking TD! Mike
