Are you sure that you have a 616? It could be that someone has swapped an OM617 Turbo in there.

On paper, it certainly looks like the 190D would be faster, quicker, and more economical.
The 190D 2.2 5 speed manual will always have a quicker 0-60 time than any 240D 4 speed with any diff combo

I think every 240D that I have owned had a governor which would prevent reaching 89 mph.

My 300d euro na would go 100 though.

I REALLY cannot believe a 240 with 4 speed, and a 2.88 would be useful on any hills from a start...

floored to pull away on a hill... that means you are slipping the clutch.

The 190D 2.2 5 speed will hit that 97.

I agree, on a hill with a 2.88 will be KILLER on the clutch. Riding it like is necessary with a 2.88 will cause hot spots to form on the flywheel and heat cracks to form on the clutch disk. It would reduce life from the 150k miles that we see all day, to probably 75k miles.

Agreed, this thread makes no sense. I had a 617 turbo 4 speed car i put an 85SD 2.88 in and it performed great on the highway, but even with an engine at TWICE the power, it was a bit sluggish on takeoff. Completely acceptable and still fun to drive, but until the turbo kicked in a bit dogged.

The OP needs to verify he actually has a 2.88 diff. Seems to me much more likely hes running a 3.07 and THINKs its a 2.88. Was the actual stamped housing number verified?

Oh I don't know, 288 vs 307 is not that much of a jump. I think it would be a little tough to tell the difference.

You could tell in the 300D. I swapped out a 3.07

Did the swap to a 3.07 from stock and it's like night and day.
Cruzing @ 70mph with the engine just running 3K plenty of power for hills.
Starts from a dead start on hills are no problem.
Car seems faster overall with 1st usable.
If you've got a 240D do the swap!

Thanks for trying this and confirming what I found, and I have an extra 2.88 if you want to try that.

That governor is more commonly known as Physics. 89MPH is fast for a 240D. The USA autos top out more like 82mph and the 4speeds closer to 85. Only the Euro 5speed 240s with a little more power and a little more gear show 90MPH as a top speed on the spec sheet.

I might take you up on that.
Let me run this ratio for a few weeks and I'll report back. I'm going to try to get some accurate MPG figures when I put the correct speedometer in.
