Where can I find a 717.400 crossmember?

I think I have a line on 3-4 717.400 swap kits and possibly one 717.420. Unfortunately, the seller does not have the crossmember (123 242 26 01), and I'm wondering if anyone here has had luck obtaining this part in the US. I called a guy at benzpartsforless.com, and although they show it on their website, he confirmed over the phone that they cannot actually get it. Can I get this through the Classic Center? Do I need to know someone in Europe?

Good luck. MB says NLA. I tried to help another forum member find one, and invested a good week and no dice.

The crossmembers are fairly simple. I suspect it would not be too hard to modify one from another model to fit. (actually we have done it before here).

You fit it to your 300D NA, right? How did you do it? What crossmember did you start out with?

The crossmember should be an easy fab. Just make sure you've got the alignment right before you break out the welder.

Sorry, its been too long. we may have had one from the 280e but I know they are pretty simple and can be adapted....see Mach 4's post above.

Any descent welding, fabrication, and/or machine shop can make you one that will work as well or better than the factory unit.

All they need is the design dimensions for hole size/location and center drop.

I have the 5 speed crossmember, shift rods and driveshaft from a euro 300D. They aren't for sale but I'll gladly send you photos and any dimensions you may need. I'm a bit busy over the next few days but I can get to it by the middle of next week.

Jooseppi, i have used that crappy welder i gave you to make a crossmember. Once you get the transmissions in hand you can easily fab one up.

Fab shop will be exceedingly expensive vs just making you own. I modified a crossmember out of two automatic crossmembers.

Did some searching, and this is what the part looks like you need.

WTB: Crossmember getrag 717.400

I was thinking you needed one from a 240D auto or 280E.

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions and info!

VT220D, if you could do that, it would be very nice. The length of the front section of the driveshaft would also be nice.

Anyway, it looks like I will be receiving 3 717.400 swap kits with correct shift linkages, shifter, etc. in a month or so from now, depending on shipping. There will be linkages for both a 240D and a 300D, but the flywheels will all be 617 flywheels. I'll post when they come in, as I'll be looking to sell two of the sets and keep one for myself. I'll also most likely get a (probably more complete) kit in late winter/early spring and possibly a 717.420.

The "real" zingers in the kit are

1. The front section of the DS. I currently have the 300D and 240D. I am looking for a donor to make the 240D. I can measure those for you.

2. The shifter is unique. Good look on that.

3. The X-member is NLA and you could "fab" one, but there's a fine line between a total hack job and a decent retro job. If you can find a decent shop, then you will spending a few hundred bucks on a few of those ...

4. The shift linkages "should" be somewhat easy, but then again there's a fine line between total hack job vs. decent retro job.

If you can get the 717.400 (I am guessing from Hudidy), and the correct FW, then some of the other parts are easy:

1. Pedal assembly is easy
2. Miscellaneous lines, et cet , are easy, e.g., hydraulic, electric, et cet

If you want the measurements for the front sections of the DS, let me know. I think I posted them a while back, but I can re-measure if you need them.

Thanks! I've looked for the measurements, but haven't seen them. I figure that that's relatively easy to retro from a 240D manual shaft, though, right?

This is my main regret on the deal. Wish I had them, but the price is decent enough that I'm OK with it. Fabbing one -- or paying someone to fab one, depending -- shouldn't be too too much and I'll have a freakin 5-speed .

Yup.

Yes, from Hudidy.

Yeah, if you could get me those measurements, that would be awesome. I'm going to be installing this into my 300SD, but the measurements would be useful for me to provide to potential buyers of the other kits.
