I hear Turbo again. I feel acceleration again, Yippee, Thanks.

I figure I lose 10 MPH with the differentials speeds. Speed says 70 I'm going 60 mph. The good thing is I get at 46 MPG from odometer miles! Mike
100% impossible to be getting 46mpg.

I thought he was just throwing 46 mpg out there because the speedo is out of whack with the diff ratio.

I'm gonna adopt this thread here with a turbo question.. I've got an 85' 300d with a 300sd motor in it. I had the turbo rebuilt and it is nice and tight, thing is I hooked a boost gauge to it and it pulls 20+psi under hard acceleration. Is that okay? Can this motor handle that?

Usual limit is one bar or 14 psi most folks set theirs @ 12 to maintain a margin
The 617 is strong but for durability go with factory recomendations.

The thread's not up for adoption. Start a new one.

Thx Vstech, Charlie , everyone. Ok boost hose from now on. You may have surmimised that my 300d skills are pre school level. Let me get this straight. If I has a 83 turbo Diesel engine , that is a SD or a TD?. When we changed the engines and trans. , we changed the speedo so I could have a tach. That does not work Due to a missing tach amp . I have the donor diff that matches the turbo engine. I don't have the desire to change them just yet.. so yes, I am getting 46 mpg by dividing the odometer miles by the fuel used!

So you have the non turbo diff? That would be a 346 ratio. Then you have a speedo designed for a turbo car, and a 307 ratio diff? So the speedo sees an engine speed as covering more distance than you are so to get a corrected reading you will need to multiply what it says by a factor of whatever the ratio is between 346 and 307. Not having a calculator handy I'll say that is about .8. So if it says you have covered lets say 100 miles, the distance needs to be multiplied by that fraction and you will find you are traveling less distance by the factor in my example it would be 80 miles.

So if your odometer (assuming it is correct) says you have gone 100 miles and you have burned 4 gallons of fuel you will show 25 mpg. But you need to mulitiply that by the factor and you will find you are getting something less than 20 mpg I imagine.

The ENGINE would be a 617a the vehicle would be whatever is on the trunk badge.

You could call it a 3.0L TD MOTOR. But SD is a model of car, as is a TD...

All 83's are turobed, the TD has an extra pump on the engine to power the rear suspension.

You'll need to source a tach amp and wiring harness to get a signal from the crank. That changed in 1984.

My father had a 82 CD and Mom had a 83 300D. The CD seemed much slower and at 65 would tach lower than the sedans 3k. Recently I noticed my speedo in the sedan is off pretty good, 70 is really 64ish. I am popping out the dash to fix Ac pod, wire open center vents and fix rheostat for lights. Cluster should be stamp dated correct? Has the 120mph speedo, CD had the 85mph I think. Did they have same gear ratios? Always thought that either speedo or trans was replaced(wrong speedo gear) and hence why the discrepency.

My memory started working! I set the valves, then the boost line kept blowing out. So car ran dull. I had big smart idea to stick boost gauge on manifold port. You Mercedes people. Got me to hook boost tube Back on pump. All is good. Now it shifts up with a clunk on a soft pedal. Heavy pedal no clunk. For Down shifts.. Loud clunk every time.. Good news. Omg, car is fast and mean. Mike
