I have two W123 300D's and they have had failed engine shocks or maybe a missing one at different times. Can't say I noticed.
I'd say the burdon is on you to show that the deletion of factory Mercedes Benz parts and features makes no perceptible difference in driving feel. If you honestly think removing the shocks makes no difference, how about you remove all 4 suspension shocks from your cars and drive with just springs. Shouldn't make a difference, right? The shocks don't support car weight, they just dampen vibration and oscillations. You don't need 'em. They're expensive and necessary.

See how absolutely ridiculous that sounds?

The engine shocks are there for a reason. Your neglected maintenance shouldn't be passed off as a successful modification...

A few years ago I filled the mounts with shore A 40 urethane. They haven't collapsed like every other 300D I have ever seen and chassis vibration is no different.
If your mounts are not torn from oil/fuel contact damage then the engine should NOT shake during shutdown.
Yeah, those MB engineers didn't know what they were doing. It's almost laughable the cars last so long being designed by people with no clue about auto tech and engineering.

Clack on Slow Left Turns-Engine Shock Mount?

83 300D in my sig, currently at 380,000 miles.

I have an audible clack on some slow left hand turns. It's loud enough that you don't have to be listening for it, but not super loud. I raise the front wheels off the ground and couldn't find any looseness in any of the steering components*, but the mounting rubber for the right side engine shock seems pretty bad. I thought I moved it with my fingers when I was underneath the car, but I was unable to duplicate from topside with my eyes on it. Could this be responsible for my noise? Also, the hot idle shake has been worse than usual over the last couple of months.

*Except for the slop in the steering box. I should do something about that.

Sounds like bad motor mounts.

The guys were saying it is not doing anything important. I say if you don't know why the factory put it there does not make it unimportant. I suspect the extra shaking without it is hard on hoses and such as they are jerked around.

I think the engineers added those engine shocks so when the vacuum pods failed and the transmission made hammer to anvil noise upon shifting we Americans wouldn't totally freak out thinking the engine might jump through the hood.

Post 240D Engine Shaking

Hm ;

Late to the party yet again, dammit .

My 1982 240D has been eating air cleaners for two decades + now....

I've replaced the motor mounts and shock bushings, the shocks tested fine when off the car yet the engine still shakes at idle enough to rip the rubber mounts at least once a year and recently the alloy air cleaner can itself, took me several years to find an un damaged / un cracked one last time .

I have a full set of Greazer's rebuilt, matched and balanced fuel injectors .

Pop pressure makes a huge difference in engine shaking and smoothness .

Only the shocks proper are expen$ive, the bushing kits are dirt cheap from The M-B Classic Center .

If there's any question at all about the motor mounts use factory ones, not mystery brand .

This is an old thread, I'd like to hear how the car is doing now .

Those things do very little -if anything at all- under normal operating conditions.
Mine are brand new. I’ve taken them off, put them back on, put on one and not the other, put both in my side pocket, no discernible difference.
