Also, I did paint of a set of stainless steel wheel covers to fit my aluminum wheels. I used a plastic stencil from Benzrestorer on eBay.

I stripped off the old paint, removed dents, sanded some scuffs, then primed them and had to use a thinner-soaked rag to wipe off a lot of overspray on the star as well as the outer rim.

Then I did the paint.

Then I wet-sanded them and installed the clips.

Why did I paint five? So I have a spare:

That was a lot of work just to upgrade to aluminum wheels.

Thumbs up Update

Thank you for taking the time to share all this detail .

I have both light alloy wheels and the hub caps and nearly mangled my fingers installing the clips .

Your W116 looks very nice .

I agree, the reduced unsprung weight is noticeable .

Talking Hubcap "Fun" (?)

THANK YOU for this thread .

I went out to my 1982 240D that I bought light allow wheels for and checked the hub caps I was ready to send out for re painting and Lo ! they're ALL chromed steel .

I remember buying them off a wrecked W114 Coupe twenty years ago.....

I've found one of the originals that came with the car and have some with random colors scattered about in my pile's 'o junk, time to begin testing each one for magnetism and then see if I have five un curbed ones I can have done .

So many old vehicles needing my attention, so little time .
