OM 603 960 TIMING HELP
Hi To everybody
I need your help please as I am doing head gasket and some other major rebuild but I have some problem concerning timing OT. In my car a w 124 300 D Turbo 1992 I can found OT but the indicator is some kind of BRACKET bolted on the engine and this is adjustable. I unfortunately unbolted it and discovered after it was adjustable so now before move the engine I would like to block in good position. Is there other fixed way to see OT ? I saw some kind of HOLE in face of OT on the block may be I can use this but I am not sure. Thanks a lot Alberto |

If you have the head off then it's easy to find 0, it's the highest point of travel of cylinder #1.
If you've already put the head back on then you will need to pull the pre chamber and use a dial indicator with a long neck to figure out the high point. Be sure to only rotate clockwise so that the chain maintains proper tension. Once you have the bottom figured out then set your cam. That is easy, there are alignment marks on the main cam gear. Just be sure you are not 180 degrees out - both #1 cam lobes should be in the clear. Finally once you have 0 established set engine to 15 ATDC and install your IP Factory manual link:Model 124 Maintenance Manual Index

OK
Thanks a lot
I did not removed the bracket and with marks produced by washer I was able to put in place may be 1 or 2 degree of error. As I can see camshaft with 2 marks aligned. I will do as you told me with gauge when head off I will do OT on 1 st piston. Thanks a lot Alberto |
