Does anyone have a CHEAP solution to the W210 driver's mirror issue?

The driver's mirror on my 98 has gotten brown(ish) and is beginning to distort the image...possibly becoming a safety issue. I was astounded to see how expensive the replacement glass is for that mirror! I watched a video of a guy taking apart the mirror and actually draining the fluid out of the mirror....but even he admitted that it wasn't worth it for all the time it took.

I'd be happy to forego the special properties of the mirror and just have a plain ol' mirror. Anyone stumble upon any cheap solutions to this issue?

On my gf's w202 which had the same issue I went to a wreckers and baught a mirror from one that did not have the auto dim feature. Problem solved. Only issue was the wiring was different for the mirror heater and I never did get around to figuring it out. So the one mirror isn't heated.

I also watched the same YouTube video you did.

Buy a sheet of mirrored glass.
Cut the profile.
Etch the surfaces with Hydroflouric acid (very carefully).
Epoxy the new mirror onto the old.

Done.

Be sure to paint the edge of the new mirror so that corrosion doesn't creep into the edges of the silver.

I have (junkyard, ~$5 each) spares for both mirrors of my '96 W210. They must be different 'cause no way they can have fluid in them. What does this fluid do???

It's for cars with auto dimming mirrors.

Ahh, thanx. The '96 W210 doesn't have that sort of fancyness, only plain electrically-adjustable heated mirrors. Doesn't even appear in the catalogs as an option. The inside mirror is self-dimming but I think it's electrical, at least the mirror doesn't look like it has any fluid inside.

202s and 210s have the same mirror. So that may help your junkyard search.

To an extent if we are talking complete units. If the W210 has memory and the W202 not, the adjustment motor is different. Memory has a set of potentiometers and internal motor wiring is different enough that .

The actual glass / housing might be the same.

No need to acid etch, use 2 sided tape. From what I recall, some auto parts sell plastic cut to fit mirror "glass". Also don't break the original mirror apart, just stick the new stuff on top.

If you took the car to a glass shop they should be able to cut real glass for you to stick on.

Shertex

Bad news, have 2 mirror one is complete and the other is just mirror; both are passenger side.

Keep me in mind if you need any other parts that may fit a 99 W210.

If the surface is totally smooth like glass, etching is insurance. It would suck if your mirror came off and crashed into the car behind you...

Smooth isn't an issue, surface energy is the only concern.
