Funky cluster after removal (240D, 81')
Pulled my instrument cluster this morning to repaint the needles (they look great), reinstalled it, and now my speedometer and oil pressure gauge are acting up. Initially my speedo registers nothing, then around 30mph or so it jumps up and works normally provided I don't come to a complete stop.
Say I'm driving 10mph or just above and I give the cluster a light tap with my index finger, it'll start working. My hypothesis is that vibrations above 30mph or so are jiggling something that gets the thing going again (a natural tap of the finger). Now the oil pressure gauge starts fine, performs fine, but then maybe 10 seconds after I turn the car off, i hear a pop, or a click and then the needle drops down to about .5-.75 and then sort of wobbles its way down to zero over the course of a few seconds. Is something too tight? Not tight enough? I was so close to being finished... Last edited by Shern; 03-18-2016 at 05:02 PM. Reason: Specificity |

What kind of vehicle do you have?
I would double check that the circular connector on the back of the cluster is plugged in properly. There is a D shaped polarity key on the back of the connector that gets broken off easily. If this key is gone the connector can be plugged in at a random position. This will cause all kinds of trouble.

Could you have gotten paint on the stop for the speedo needle? Perhaps a little paint on the dial at the stem of the oil pressure needle would cause one to act the way you describe.
Snatch the cluster out and make sure the connectors are clean, tight and check the needles for paint while you're in there.

Fixed it.
Know what it was? This is bordering on the absurd...
Found this info on another forum. On the speedo, the little plastic nub that the needle rests on is actually magnetized. There's a plastic sheath on the thing that I guess gets worn over time and at a certain point, makes the needle stick until the force of the speedo cable at speed is enough to dislodge the needle -this is why my finger tapping was working at all speeds, and the needle would dislodge on its on around 25mph. There's also a nub/sheath on the 85mph side but as I drive a 240D it's unlikely I'll be seeing those speeds anytime in the foreseeable future. I swapped them. Then I bent the needle up slightly to offset any minuscule amount of sagging due to the fresh coat of paint. The oil gauge, was probably always doing that. In essence, the pressure doesn't drop immediately upon cessation of the engine. When it does finally drop (I guess a few seconds after I kill it), I hear and see the needle drop as the pressure diminishes. Unbelievable... |
