Poor shifting in hot weather

Hello All,

It has been hot here for the past couple of days and i noticed that the shifting in my car has gone to garbage!

I have a 1982 240d manual.

What happens is i put the car into gear, and it seems to take somewhere between 1-5 seconds for it to catch. The engine will rev really high and then i will let it sit for a second, i can feel the catch and will be good in that entire gear...

I then shift to second and same thing..

Shifting to third is also the same... but sometimes it seems to "catch a little" and basically rev really really high (and only go up slightly in speed)... then i stop accelerating for maybe 2-3 seconds and eventually it catches into gear.

Once in a certain gear.. there are no issues in that gear itself.

I replaced the clutch fluid maybe 3 months ago (maybe it could have air bubbles??) and was wondering if these are any signs of any other transmission problems.

This only happens in HOT weather... When it is cool outside... i never see this problem.

Sounds like a worn clutch disc to me if I'm reading it right

Ditto, the clutch sounds like it could go at any moment.

But it is not showing in cool weather. Why would a clutch disk only do this in hot weather?

my thoughts were something along the lines of possibly a sticking master or slave. The thought being maybe in hot weather... the fluid heats or metallic moving parts in the master and slave start to stick. Maybe for some reason when i depress the clutch they take a while to "settle back in/bubbles in the clutch line become an issue at hotter temperatures." It could be a clutch disc, but i am just throwing out ideas.. as i don't really know how to diagnose this one. (would be a pain to take off the tranny though

I Don't think the hot weather has anything to do with your problem otherwise people in Phoenix AZ will be having same issues and in the San Francisco bay you don't have weather above 90 maybe a few times

true.... but it was about 90F earlier this week and it started happening again (di this last summer too).

Seems like this will become an issue again especially when it is hot. If it is cold outside... it never has this issue.

Try shifting on a hill in cool weather. Your symptoms sound exactly like a slipping disk. I expect that the temp has nothing to do with it.

Unusual things can't be diagnosed without pulling the clutch and looking. I had a clutch on an old Z that made a ticking noise but it seemed trans related. It was definitely connected to engine speed. A local redneck offered to R&R the trans for $100 because he had a lift, needed cash and that car is easy to work on. Unfortunately he didn't completely remove the clutch and only looked in the sides to see that the disk wasn't worn. I had a former factory Datsun mechanic rebuild the trans for ~$300 and reinstalled it. The noise was still there. The PO had installed 1 wrong bolt in the pressure plate and it was hitting something and making the noise. The trans probably didn't need building.

My point - you'll need to get in to find the problem.

I've always been able to center the disk by feeling around the sides and making sure that the disk sticks out the same on all sides.
