I maintain that if you have such problems with your camshaft that something will break if you set your valve clearance with the lobe at slightly off of the 1:00 position then you surely have worse problems to deal with.

Clearly there's a lot of emotion (and ellipses) here, and I can't compete with that. Everyone should take the available info and decide how they want to do things on their own car. Do it all at your own risk (including anything in the FSM). Or take it to the dealer.

No one I have seen suggested anything would ' break' if you use 11 or 12 o'clock.... but it is very important to set the valves correctly and keep them that way if you do not want to have to take the head off the engine and do a valve job.
and people have not suggested ' a little off' one o'clock....they have said anything from 11 to 12 o'clock... FOR NO RATIONAL REASON.

Rog, I think it is difficult to find a Benz dealer willing to work on a W123. The two I spoke with claim that the W123 mechs retired years ago. I think we are faced with DIY or a good independent. Recently one of the better independents in Richmond VA told me they are shutting off the "older" Benz work.

By the way, I agree that if you cannot set all valves on the cam base circle at once then you have a bad camshaft that should be replaced. I ran into this on my 1978 300D. I am going to try my experiment anyway.

Fair enough. I just meant that any DIY job is assuming a risk yourself and if you don't want the risk you'll have to take it to someone who does.
