240d 1982 fuel gauge light on but needle showing half tank

I just replaced the fuel gauge sending unit in my 240d with a unit from a 300d. The needle now works perfectly but I noticed the fuel low light is on.

Is this a problem with the gauge in the dash?

The needle is showing the correct amount of fuel so the light should not be on.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Pete

Most likely the sender. There is a wire that might have broken in the sender that should be completing a circuit when the float is at the bottom. Its easy enough to replace that wire if it broke. There is another loop of resistance wire for the level indication, but it sounds like that is fine. I think you can just unplug the sender and the light ahould go off, if I remember correctly. Its been a while.

Most likely the Sending unit as mentioned.

Remove the First Aid kit.
Unplug the plug on the sender.
You will need a 46mm or a 1 13/16" Socket to remove the nut.
Then lift out the sender tube slowly so the fuel will drain out as you lift it.
Have some a pan and plenty of rags.

I cut one in 1/2 so it wasn`t so long.

Remove the small nut on the bottom and metal plate.
Hold the tube and lift the guts out.

It is probably gunked up with sludge. use a soft brush, some gas or spray carb clean to clean her up.

As mentioned, you could have a broken wire. be careful as they are a thin copper wire. Think there is 2 of them.

There should be three wires on the sender one of them is the feed fir the bulb circuit. If the bulb goes out when you remove this wire, the sender has a short. If the bulb remains on, the short is in the wiring or dash pod..

I pulled the fuel sending unit out today and took it apart.
It was nasty. It looked like gray/black mud inside the tube and around the float.
I cleaned it all up and it seems to be working properly.
No wires were broken. I was very careful cleaning the center rod. It still felt a little rough after cleaning but the float slid up and down so I didn't worry about it.

Now I'm wondering if I should remove my fuel take and clean it out.

I have 302k miles on my 1982 240d.

Any thoughts?

Thx

Your 82 240D has a plastic 17 gallon tank.
If you are going to the trouble to remove it, find a tank out of a 300D.
They use a 21 gallon tank.
It will increase your range by 90 miles or???

You may not have any crud in the tank, the sludge you found is from years of accumulation.
You ought to pull the tank screen, it could be gunked up.

I actually found a tank in PNP from a 85 300D they forgot to poke full of holes. .
Pulled it and it was squeaky clean. The sender though was gunked up.

240D up to 79 used a 21 gal tank then in 80 they went to a 17 gallon metal tank.
I know 82 83 use the plastic one not sure of 81.

I cut up the plastic tank with a Skill saw and threw it in the recycle.

I have a 82 300d parts car. I will pull the tank.
Is the tank metal in the 300d?
Are there any issues with the larger size tank?

Thanks.
