When is low to low on oil pressure?

Just replaced the faulty oil level sending unit on my car this weekend. Best $27 I have spent. I just could not handle one more yellow light on my dash. I will take care of the break wear indicator light tonight. Well, all this got me thinking about oil pressure.

How low is to low? I realize that temperature and RPM's are big factors. All things being equal, when at idle is low to low and how fast should the gauge peg itself from idle.

My 87 300td, when fully warm and coming off the freeway, will drop to 2.5 at idle then slowly climb and peg at 1300-1500rpm's.

I was driving my friends E55 on Saturday, it does not have an oil pressure gauge. When did MBZ do away with them? I felt naked without one. Great car though, made my diesel slow and old.

Any thoughts?
