B2 piston - can someone confirm symptoms?

hi guys

since few days ago my tranny started to act up on me
what I had is serious slipping when I floor the pedal or
going uphill. Eventually it catch up the speed but slip is
unbearable.

it was sudden and it behaves like it ever since.

engaging from P to D takes 3 seconds. Reverse is ok.

fluid recently changed and level is ok.

I did some reading these days and it seems to be b2 piston issue.I have one spare from old tranny and would like to try to swap them but would like to
receive some confirmation of more experienced tranny guys on forum.

edit: could it be done without oil draining?

thank in advance

cheers
ChO

I am not a transmission Tech., but my first guess is low control pressure, I'd check pressures.

low control pressure as ....bad pump? ... or bad modulator valve

Could be either, more common is leaky seals internally. If modulator then the pressure will stay low at higher RPM, if a bad pump or leaky seals then often the pressure will rise with RPM to normal. Also with seals it often gets better with warm fluid (softens seals so that they seal). Can also be a very tired clutch, ... which won't get better no matter what you do. If the pressure is good then you need to look at B2 or clutches, it is IMO the easiest first thing to check.

Did this happen just after your fluid change? What was found during the change? Silt in the pan? Fluid smell normal, burned, or like solvents (additives)? Why was it changed?

Hopefully one of the more knowledgeable transmission folks here will chime in soon.

.

it happened 4 months after fluid change which was done due to
normal interval maintenance... fluid itself did not smell or look
suspicions....

it does not get better when worm.....slippage is the same....

HELP

Was the Filter also changed?

when I had no forward movement until I reved the Engine changing the Fluid and the Filter resored normal function. However, less then 1 Year later the B2 Piston broke.

Installing a new B2 Piston gets you the most updated Piston. Swapping one from another Transmission may not acomplish that unless it has been updated.

You can change the B2 Piston only some fluid loss but not all of the fluid.

yes, filter was changed too... maybe is somehow clogged...

I might start with changing filter only...and if no help ...B2 afterwards

not sure...

If you change the Filter put the used one in a Zip-lock plastic Bag so you can reuse it if it turns out the Filter is not the issue.

In my B2 Piston thread there is a picture of the broken B2 piston. One of the things in the Pic is if you look where the B2 piston rides on the original anodized aluminum bushing you can see marks where it grabbed on that area.

The new bushing is made of something like Nylon and I assume to take care of the grabbing issue caused by the metal bushing.

After removing the B2 Piston how can you detect a broken B2 Band?

Could be b2

Here was my b2 ordeal

Blew my B2 piston

If you have any doubt whether you have the updated piston, change it. It is such a catostrophic failure that you want to avoid it.

The only warning I had was a month before the big blowout I lost my forward gears at an intersection. I got it going after shutting down and restarting and stupidly ignored it from then on. I ended up stuck at night in Oakland CA (dangerous hood) on my way home from my friends place. I limped it whining and weakly short shifting into high gears back to my friends. I creatively used a lot of reverse! Sucked big time.

Pull the B2 and look inside.

B2 is only responsible for 1st gear engagement. Since you are slipping at speed I'd bet you have a plugged pump or worn friction discs...
