Hmm... flares only above 1/4 throttle sounds like when a throttle rod clip broke and the VCV wasn't connected to the throttle linkage. Does the VCV lever move with the pedal?

Should the highlight be understood to mean that an automatic upshift from 2nd is accompanied by a flare? If so, then what you are experiencing is a 2-3 flare, rather than the 1-2 flare which you had initially indicated as happening.
If you manually shift 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4, are there flares?

Doesn't the transmission still start in first gear when 2 is selected and just not go to three?
Like I said, I can go through the gears without flaring if I shift manually.

Actually, I take that back.
It flared on the way to work today when I manually shifted from S to D. So...I guess this is a 2-3 flare of which there is much to explore searching the forums...

Exact same as mine with 722.4 box.

Have a read of this thread K1, K2 and B1 722.4 valve replace

..narrowed it down to B1 valve or modulator which I have yet to do..
