I have a 2009 E-Class - Bluetec and I read an article about a blue fluid that this care uses to purify the gases from exhaust system.
The article says that the car will not run if this fluid reservoir get empty. Believing that is correct, I think the multi function instrument in the cluster should have an indicator like it has for "check engine" "tire pressure" "glow plugs" which goes off when the engine start running. I never saw any warning sign for "Add Blue" like it has for "check engine" and etc. Can someone help me about this subject? Thanks.

I'm not sure the 09 has it. What does the owners manual say about it?

The entire book mention nothing about ADD BLUE.
Not even multi function display have no signals like "check engine" for that feature. Can be for cars newer than 2009? Anyway, thanks for your interest in help.

Is the 2009 a bluetec?
You are looking for ADBLUE, or diesel exhaust fluid / DEF. In the later bluetec badged cars there is a blue ADBLUE filler next to the fuel filler, I'm not sure that the 2009 is a bluetec however, an internet search should get you that info.

ADBLUE starts with 2010. Previous 2008 and 2009 are designated BluTek but do not require ADBLUE fluids.

Thanks Rock.
In the SCR cars, when the DEF is low, the information display will tell you ADBlue low. It will eventually tell you 20 starts remaining and count down to zero starts. The fluid is available almost anywhere diesel fuel or auto parts and accessories are sold, it is fairly simple to fill. However, Mercedes has its special filler neck to interface with its own ADBlue bottles to tell the computer you filled it. So, you buy one 2liter bottle from Mercedes, pour that in, then use the top of that bottle for a filler / funnel to fill with VW or generic, your choice. So far the dealer filled mine at 10,000 miles, only needed 4gallons to fill the 10gallon tank, I'm not expecting it to be a frequent service item if the tankful lasts 25,000 miles.

I understand the adblue tank takes the place of the spare tire?

The 2009 does not use DEF fluid, so nothing to be concerned about. Bluetec does imply Adblue is used, MB applied to many vehicles prior to the introduction of SCR/Adblue systems.

Some of the Mercedes started coming with run-flat tires so that the spare tire area was used for a tank, the GLE has the tank in the RR flank, and a spare tire in the well.
