'83 240D - mystery intermittent noise

I'm just getting this 240d on the road after about a year of fixup. 208k

When you rev the engine, you get this rushing noise that sounds like a bearing. I've put in a new water pump, so thats not it.

AC pump disconnected. So- I guess that leaves the alternator or the power steering pump? Other ideas?

Theres lots of places these old tanks make noise, additionally have you ruled out: wheel bearings, drive shaft bearing, check out the half shaft boots, differential oil, belt tension/condition, ac clutch- what makes you think it is the tranny?

Yeah, I realized that it happens in the driveway not moving. So, nothing in the drivetrain. I'm going to try to post an audio clip. Tomorrow I'll go after it with a stethoscope.

Never mind. It turned out to be that the alternator belt was loose. That is all. If I could delete this thread, I would.

Happy to hear that it wasn't anything serious and an easy fix.

I was going to suggest turning up the stereo but it sounds like you found an even better solution.
