Oil cooler

I just posted under parts for sale that I need an oil cooler for my 240d. If I can't find one does anyone have any ideas about retrofitting an after market one and what kind works best in the 240d application?

This is a great post.

If you can't find a 240D oil cooler or they are NLA, it's helpful tpo know what to substitute, if anything.

What in particular is wrong with the original?

Is this one with the hose attachments both at the bottom? If that is the case maybe there is some way to use the 240D Oil Coolers that have a bottom and top hose connection.
Is there room for a 300D Oil Cooler?

The typical genric add on Oil Coolers would work if you can find some place safe to mount it. However, you would of course be faced with changing the Hose system.

I do not know on the 240Ds but the Oil Cooler Hose inside diameter on mine is 15mm with 5/8" being the closest US size which is a larger ID.
While there is add on Oil Coolers with different sized inlet and out lets the typical one you can get at the local autoparts I believe only go has high as for 1/2" ID Hose.
After that they are harder to find and more expensive.

Apparently some 240Ds have bottom hose connections and others have bottom and top hose connections.
That might also mean there is differences in how the cooler mounts.

On mine both hoses attach at the bottom. I believe I may have found a used one though. I broke my old one while trying to remove the lines. Needed to remove the radiator. I sprayed it with PB Blaster for a few days and used 2 wrenches but still cracked it.

I have felt some of your pain on that. One of the nipples on mine stripped when I backed off the Hose Nut. Thankfully that was many years ago now.

Use the 300D oil cooler and make stainless steel lines. The 300D oil coolers are pretty easy to find used.

If you get another cooler when you install the hoses some Never-seeze type compound of even wheel bearing grease on the threads will help prevent corrosion between the hose nuts and threads.

If you had a bottom-only oil cooler, can you flip it upside down and protect the connections? Maybe with a longer hose?

OK, my usual post on stuff like this.

Almost every town of any size will have a Parker and/or Swaglok store as well as a heavy truck/heavy equipment repair facility. ALL can make up any type of hose, hard line etc, that you might need. I skipped the cooler on mine by my application is pretty unique so I'm not recommending that for a daily driver. Anyhow, if you take your messed-up cooler to the Parker store they can provide a high-pressure compression fitting (NOT the same as a hardware store compression fitting) that will fit the tube with the messed-up fitting (cut off the bad part) and go from there to make the cooler as good as or better than new.

Don't toss the old cooler unless it was leaking before the problem happened.

The bottom of the cooler broke off and stayed attached to the line. So I don't think its repairable.

Does anyone have a 300d oil cooler for sale? I would not mind having a spare for a quick emergency surgery.

I would not hesitate to run a non- turbo 240d for a very long time without the oil cooler until I found a good replacement.

Also, the bottom portion of that cooler is replaceable if it broke in the right spot.
