Question Need help with tranny noise when cold

So after starting and driving my 1984 300d yesterday I noticed a noise similar to continueus tire chirp when in first gear but more of a brushy sound than a chirpy one. I know this wasn't tire squeal because the car was cold and slow. I got up to 25 and then tried to replicate the sound. So I slowed down a bit and shifted into L and the noise repeated itself again and changed with engine speed. I then went on to drive the car normally on the highway and when I approached city streets later on where I would be going back down to 1st gear again the noise wasn't there.

I did the same thing today with the same result. The noise only happens in first and when cold. Any ideas what this might be? Thanks, all comments are appreciated

Are you able to pinpoint where the sound is coming from? Do you feel any vibrations or rubbing when gears shift?

Laughing at "tire chirp" and "tire squeal" in a 300D.

Could be something unrelated.

Two months ago I had a somewhat similar noise.
With an open window and driving close to walls I was able to hear it clearer on the passenger side more than driver side.
Sound is sometimes hard to pin point.

Turned out to be the front brake pad retain spring (metal double T thing that holds down the back side of pad) had broken and the metal was leaning into the disc.

Sound may vary depending on the degree of contact.

It sheared one of my brake pad sensors without eliciting a dummy light.

Anyway, good luck in your discovery process.
