Isuzu 4BD2T -- I have one in my motorhome and it rocks. They are hard to find with reasonable mileage though. They are extremely simple mechanical engines (non computer controlled after 1990) and not a lot of maintenance.

Keep the 12V. Fix the steering. Put a set of injectors in it, change the plate, refresh the brakes, check the turbo for play & whatever else needs attention and go.

Quality of life is inversely related to the number of engines you have to keep running.

Mine is an04, with around 230K on the clock.
I looked at a Sprinter and noted that all of the package delivery services use them. I also noted that they dump them at 200,000 mi. A friend of mine who owns a salvage yard says that he had trouble at slightly more than 200k. He needs his vehicles to work and went with a gasser Ferd because they are easy to get fixed when they break. Wrenching ain't on his list. He's busy and doesn't want projects.
