'95 E300D - Removal of Windscreen Washer Reservoir

I removed the intake manifold from my car tonight, pending the start of the (optimistically) soon-to-be finished glow plug replacement project. I wanted to completely remove the windscreen washer reservoir to give myself a little more room but was stymied by the hose connection on the bottom side of the unit. This is the one facing the fender well, not the one that services the headlight washers, per photo. The hose appears to simply slide onto a barbed fitting on what seems to be a small cylindrical pump, but there appears to be two thin electric wires that run into the hose itself.

I couldn't find anything on the reservoir's removal either in the on-line maintenance manual or in the forum archives.

Has anyone pulled one of these reservoirs off the car? I'm desperately trying not to break anything here and I don't see a connection point for what appear to be the two electrical wires. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Regards,
Tom

The 2 wires that go into the hose is the hose heater. Yes it simply slides onto the pump barb connection. You could pop off the pump from the tank if its easier its held in by a rubber grommet but exercise a bit of caution as you may need to replace the grommets all potential of a leak.

Thanks, dieselbenz. Yeah, the grommets do leak. I fiddled with the hose a bit trying to take it off and soon had the contents of the reservoir on the floor of the garage. It'll need replacement.

So the pump just pops up and out of the grommet to remove from reservoir? Thanks for the tip. That'll make working on the driver's side of the engine bay a little easier.

Regards,
Tom

Yes wiggle it and pull up. When it goes back in with a new grommet a bit of silicon sealant helps seal against leaks.

Pretty sure the tank itself has a 10mm nut which is on the bulk head (otherside) , hope I am not confusing this with my W210.

Spock505: Yes, there is a 10mm nut that affixes the reservoir to the side of the bulkhead. A round "foot" at the bottom fits into a recess underneath to help stabilize it.

Tom

Ugh. This reminds me I have a small leak in my E300's washer system to track down.

The heated hose can be troublesome. If the end of that hose gets dry-rotted, then you have you carefully extract the heating wires from further up that hose assembly to get more of the fluid-carrying section available to push back on the pump... I suppose this can only be done a few times before you lose all slack in that hose and have to buy a new one.

But Holy CRAP! have you see the price of that heated hose??

Next time disconnect the hose from the reservoir, have a scrap piece of hose ready connect to the pump and a empty bottle and jump the pump the terminals with a 9v batt,
