I would not do that as the soapy Water will not evaporate if left in some recess that it does not come out of.

I am not even sure some other chemical like Paint Thinner or Solvent would not damage the Oil Temp Thermostat.

If you stripped all of the parts out of the Oil Filter Housing you could use anything that is safe for use with Aluminum.

Someone who actually has cleaned their Oil Filter Housing with something will have to Post.
When I did mine I hosed the housing out with Brake Cleaner and then carefully used an Air Gun to blow it out. The Brake Cleaner evaporates fast so there was a minimal chance for it to damage anything.

I'm frustrated

I replaced the oil filter housing gasket with the 'waffle' style gasket and was able get a torque wrench on most of the bolts. I lowered the engine and bolted it back to the mounts, buttoned everything back up and the engine was clean, for a day. Drove it for a while and didn't see any oil dripping.

Yesterday i drove the car for several hours. Last night I took a look and it appears to be leaking around the area below oil filter housing.

Could it be leaking from somewhere else around that area. Everything else appears clean, i.e. valve cover gasket, turbo drain tube, etc..

I think it might be the shutoff valve as the backside of the IP below the shutoff valve is wet. The car turns off fine and there isn't any oil in the the vacuum hose, so I'm hoping that replacing the gaskets around the shutoff will help.

There is a thread "leak free 617"that may be helpful. I've taken both SDs down to the long block and have dry engines. Of course, the valve cover leaks periodically and the transmissions also.

I guess my question here is whether the shutoff valve can leak enough to produce a drip off the back of the IP? I've seen a lot of threads where the valve is leaking internally into the vacuum hose, but not anything about people having problems with an external leak.

I removed the shutoff valve tonight and found there wasn't any metal disc between the valve IP body, just a single paper gasket. It's my understanding that there is supposed to be a metal ring with a gasket on each side.

Also, the retaining bracket is bent around the 4 bolt holes. I'm thinking a PO tightened it way too much to compensate for the missing ring.

now where do I find one of those rings?

I found the part I needed from Abe here in Seattle. If you are in Seattle and need an obscure part, always check with Abe first.

After replacing the gaskets and including the requisite metal ring it looks like (fingers crossed) the leaking has stopped. In fact I wonder now whether the oil filter housing was leaking or not. I guess the lesson here is if you are chasing leaks around the oil filter housing be sure to check the shut-off valve is installed correctly.
