"removing lash" when checking timing chain stretch?

noobish question here, but in the DIY for checking timing chain stretch (PeachPartsWiki: Measuring Timing Chain Stretch) step #3 says 'just remove valve lash' and I'm not 100% sure what that means. Does it mean to set the gap between the valve and cam wider? And if so how by how much?

thanks

Just in case - "lash" in this context is an equivalent term for "valve clearance". For the 2mm lift method you make sure there is no (measurable) gap between the follower and the top of the valve stem (actually a cap on the top of the valve stem). This needs to be done when the cam is set to its lowest point, so when the egg bulge of the cam meets the follower the valve starts to move immediately...
