The remote starter switch only energizes the solenoid. If the solenoid is bad, you're no better off than futzing around with the key. The screwdriver trick actually bypasses the solenoid. When the screwdriver shorts the 2 heavy bolts together, it is doing what the solenoid usually does, that's why the starter cranks. This is also why you need the screwdriver to do it....you're passing a couple hundred amps through it.
