Skid Plate?
So, I changed the oil today on the *new* '84D... and, there is a Skid Plate under the Oil Pan??? It looks *stock* i.e., very nicely/perfectly fitted. It has a precise cutout for the Oil Pan Plug. I've never seen this before???
anyone else have/seen this??? Thanks, dennis |
Are you referring to the "noise encapsulation panel" under the engine? Usually they're tossed away when the engine is serviced for better access/convenience. It isn't all that common to find a car that old with them still present.

My five speed Euro TD came with one. its the first one I had seen.

I've got the oil pan and radiator skid plates installed.
They are heavy duty and well made. You could bottom out with confidence. And some sparks! |
Interesting... I'm removing it later this week so that I can clean the bottom of the engine. Once I get all leaks taken care of I'll probably put it back on... this will be my wife's car ...look at my sig below and you will see why!
Thanks! dennis |
If it looks like this then it is a factory oil pan skid plate.

Mercedes calls them anti-noise panels (or encapsulation panels)...in practice they retain fluid drippings in older Benzes.
Still have mine on my 91. |
Wish I had one of these. Guys usually load those up with oil pads then swap them out every oil change. No leaks.

tell me more about this... I have the plate installed and a few drops of oil go through the concave opening where the hole is. I imagine any absorbent pads that go there would need to be secured somehow, zip ties, Velcro? |
There is no noise encapsulation panel on an 84....is there?

Years ago there was a thread about the Dutch TD owner who took his wagon to Africa. (?). He installed the factory skid plate as I recalled and the factory lift it to raise the body. Anyone else remember that with the wagon covered in red dust?

No but my white 280e euro came with a skid plate like the one pictured and tall springs kit. I believe it also had 15" wheels and tires from the factory too. It was outfitted for the American Ralley of 84 which ended up being cancelled due to unrest in some of the key countries it had to run through. It was to have started in LA and ran to Alaska then to the tip of south America and back to LA.
