new water pump needed... OM617

I think I need a new water pump; the temp gauge gets hot when I'm not moving more often and I had changed the coolant less than 2000 miles back. Which is the preferred type? thanks!

Any good rebuilt water pump will be fine. If you think about it a water pump is a casting, a shaft, an impeller, a bearing and a seal. Unless it's been severely neglected the first three will be fine, which means replacing the seal(s) and bearing(s) will give you an essentially "new" pump. So just get one from a reputable rebuilder.

Generally it's recommended to get one with a cast impeller rather than a stamped one, but that's probably a small distinction in practice.

Be very careful when reinstalling the water pump pulley to make sure it is aligned correctly with the other pulleys. It has to slide back behind the crank pulley.

thank you. Are there rebuild kits? How to tell if you are buying a stamped or cast?

Cast versus stamped:

Never noticed any functional difference whatsoever though.

The stamped ones just look all wrong to me.

The one I put on mine has been working fine. Notice that the old non-mercedes one had stamped vanes and the new Gates one has is cast.

When I worked as a diesel mechanic and on my own vehicles I have insalled water pumps with cast impellers, stamped impellers and even plastic impellers and the all worked right except one. I had one Water Pump where when the coolant got hot the cast Impeller expanded and did not turn because it was not gripping the shaft. When it cooled it gripped the shaft.

I have also had rebuilt water pumps for Cars that leaked but no issues other then the one I mentioned with impellers.

I've been running a stamped one for two years now on my Mercedes and have had them on other cars. Plastic I can see someone having hesitation with, but other than that I don't get the phobia.

I've only ever heard of problems like erosion and freewheeling on cast ones, so who knows? YMMV.

No, there are no rebuild kits for water pumps. Rebuilding a water pump is not a DIY job. Removal and replacement of a water pump is a DIY job.

OK, I'm used to water pumps on marine diesels and gensets which certainly are rebuildable. Someone earlier suggested I buy a rebuilt unit- which tells me that someone rebuilds them.
Thanks!

They can be reuilt but as noted no one has ever posted that there is a Kit available and when I rebuilt Water Pumps at work you needed a hydraulic press (I have one at home).
It also usually requires that you have the other do dads to support the pump housing properly or things break or bend.

On small Engines the Water Pump Impellers are genreally not drilled and taped or have suficient strength to do that so you can use a puller.

In taking the pumps apart once in a while the cast iron empellers would crack.
They used to have rebuild kits for my old 235 Chevy inline 6 water pumps (which I used) but they did not come with new impeller. Just the bearing and the seal assembly.

But keep in mind at least at one time there was a whole lot more gasser car engine. I doubt if there was enough of the Mercedes Diesel Engines out their and people that could rebuild a water pump for them to make kits for it.
Then when you rebuild yourself you have no warranty if the water pump still has issues.

As you know bearing companies sell ball bearings if that is what a water pump has and you just have to be able to reuse the original shaft.
The same sells generic water pump seals which you would have to find some way to match up.
And, the same also sells the typical automotive Water Pump shaft with that long bearing as an assembly. However, you often need to cut off the excess shaft length to the size you need.
But, I have no experience with metric stuff to know if seals and shaft are available.
