have to re-key 84SD

I have an 85SD for parts and need to rekey the 84SD passenger door lock and ignition lock. I already have the 85 passenger door handle out to use for parts. Is there any advantage to taking one or the other ignition lock, door lock or trunk lock when the main reason to remove them is to have enough wafers for the project?

I would do whatever I could to keep the key pattern the same as original. MB keeps a record of the key cut according to the VIN and if you ever sell the car someone is going to be very confused when they try to order a VIN specific key if the locks no longer match.

If you change the keyed part beware that the electrical plug is fastened very securely on the back of the switch assembly. If you don't unfasten it you'll break something.

Don't ask how I know.

There are at least 3 keys for the car I'm working on and I have no idea what the correct key is. I could order a key from the dealer and match that. The locks all work. I'm inclined to match the keys to my other SD which is original and I have the title to and know the keys match the VIN.

I only need some more wafers to make a match and wonder if a given lock is easier to remove from the parts car - door, ignition, trunk. I also have several glove box doors with locks of unknown origin but no keys in case they will be useful.

Try the MB Classic center, they are a little more liberal on the key issue than a dealer especially if the car is 30+ years old. I've ordered keys for an early 80s 123 with only a scanned license and registration emailed to them.

it is possible to copy the key pattern from one lock to another if that is needed. just pull out and write down the leaves in order.

This may sound like a silly question but do you pretty much need to have locksmith skills and some locksmith tools to do this? I have always been interested but have been intimidated about fooling with the lock insides.

About twenty years ago my Indy replaced my ignition switch so the key does not match the door locks and I have never really been happy about that. Everything else is stock and this bothers me.

There are already threads on how to handle the leaves. I was just wondering whether 1 lock is easier to pull than the other and whether the locks are all acceptable to use for parts. I guess I'll find out when it quits raining.

@ty, you do not need locksmith skills. Remove lock per FSM.

Search Rekey Mercedes lock. The lock comes apart once the tumbler is on the bench and you remove the key.

Clean the leaves and replace to match the key you want. You may need some spares to have enough leaves.

i was able to figure it out on the workbench by taking notes as i went. it does take fine motor skills to handle those little springs.

The difference between the 84SD and the 85SD is an extra switch to activate the door pump for the later model, on the passenger side. I've never had mine apart so I'm not sure what the actual physical differences are.

FYI-the ignition can be pulled in a w123 without drilling anything. I've done it in my driveway to replace work leaves.
