Karlyn motor Mounts longevity
Does anybody have experience with Karlyn motor mounts? Previous owner replaced all my mounts when the car had 258000 miles on it back in 2011. I bought it at 316000 and it's now at 332000. It always had a vibration from the first moment I test drove it but the mounts look to be ok to me. That is they don't appear to have deteriorated much. Just wondering if they are due for replacement after five years and 740000 miles? Any way to check?
- Peter.

For myself I do not replace till the Motor Mounts are no good.
As long as you are not experienced bothersome engine shaking, collasped mounts or belts getting too close to hoses I don't see the point in replacing them. If you are speking of a W123 you can still get Lemförder/Lemfoerder/Lemforder Motor Mounts (the mercedes star is ground off of them) wich are actually made by phoenix and are the same as the mounts you would get from Mercedes. They are oddly made in Turkey and the Phoeix logo is still on them. Lemförder/Lemfoerder/Lemforder does not make the different right and left mounts but many have used the Turbo Diesel mounts on both sides with no issues. This is from my notes but there is other threads and posts on the subject. http://www.phoenix-ag.com/index_en.html Stock 84 300D Motor Mounts the same as Lemforder; pics show proof

My Stock Motor Mounts the same as Lemfoerder

I just got them today. Found that they were made in Turkey.” Lemforder Engine Mounts

Thank's for the info. Looking at the mounts and at the clearance between the hoses etc they seem to be ok but there is an issue with shaking on startup, shutdown and a vibration during driving. But the front anti-vibration mount is also missing and I have a replacement for it which hopefully might make a difference. Also need to do a valve adjustment etc. Got some work to do on it coming up.

I thought the shocks were designed to stop shaking at shut down? Do you have engine shocks?

Engine Shock / Damper
Quote:
Just replaced the engine shocks on my 603 motor. Made a surprisingly big difference in calming the motor at idle. No motor shake. Also took the kick out of startup and shut down. Mounts are Lemforder which are much better than the other offerings, hands down. Seems to be the compound they use. Maybe a shore hardness of about 60A.

I have noticed a definite difference in vibrations from different motor mounts. With poly-filled cheap mounts w/ steel backer plate underneath, the vibrations were noticeably bad. With 1 "Made in Germany" mount and 1 "S11" as in the post #3 link, it idles noticeably smoother. But, I still get a slight resonance at certain rpm's, mostly when driving slowly in parking lots. The engine doesn't visibly move, but you feel the vibrations in the cabin. I do have a poly-filled tranny mount so that might be a remaining culprit.

So while this thread is up, I thought I might as well, post my issue.
When I shut off my engine, the car shakes and rumbles a lot. You can hear the hard resonance in the cabin going throughout the chassis. It's quite bad, I thought this was normal because it is a diesel. How much shake at shutdown is too much and how can I tell if engine shocks are bad?

Mine were the originals and the passenger side shock had absolutely no resistance.
They are easy to pull and check bit chances are they need replacement. May not totally solve your issue but will help

I say that because there is another Vacuum Valve on the Steering Colum Lock that controls the Vacuum to the Shutoff. If that is not functioning correctly then you shutoff likely will not go as planned. Another way would be to hook up a Mightyvac to the Shutoff on the Fuel Injection Pump and start pumping and see what happens during the shut off. Then pump and see if the Shutoff actually holds vacuum. If the Shutoff leaks off enough vacuum it is not going to shutoff as fast or as comempletely. I know mine must be somewhat porus as it does not hold vacuum but I figure as long as it shuts down I am OK. Note that when I changed the Steering Colum Lock it came with a new Shutoff Valve on it.

Also the Transmission Mount has some effect. Mine does not have the 4th mount so the Engine and Transmission are suspended on the Motor and Transmission mounts

Replace the engine damper shocks
Quote:
Mr. Giants....There will be virtually no engine shake at shut down if you simply replace the engine shocks, and your motor mounts are somewhat fresh. See my previous post above.
