W124 Monowiper Hitting Right Side of Window
Wiper blade of my 91 300D got stuck on the right side...got caught in window seal. Removed the blade and noticed that the insert was sticking out a bit. So I ordered a new blade.
But then, just to see what was going on, I shortened the end of the blade that I had. And it still seems to get caught on the right side. Has anyone had this problem, when the blade extends too far? Is this adjustable? Or am I better off just getting a 23" blade?

Is the wiper not retracting back in to the center on the right side?

It's retracting but I'm wondering if it's not retracting enough.

I suspect that the transmission ( the odd shaped thing on which the arm mounts) has skipped a tooth, or maybe it has a broken gear. You'd have to disassemble it to know. There are new ring gears available for them, but for the money, a used one may be a better choice.

Thats likely what its doing. I had a similar issue on my former 400E and I ended up just swapping out the whole wiper assembly including the motor.

Maybe as a stop gap measure I'll try to find a 22 inch blade that has the same connection. Or just make the 91 my dry weather car!

If you can find a used one in a yard or on E-bay, it's easy enough to swap.

So, from the way I describe it, it's the GEAR, 124-820-23-07, that needs to be replaced, correct? Not the motor.
Wow...pricey part new.

Put a shorter blade on...works well enough to drive safely in the rain. Now I'll just have to see how motivated I am to get it fixed.

If it was me, I'd disassemble the transmission and inspect first. It may be that the gear has skipped a tooth and can be saved. This can happen if the grease has become dry or contaminated with dirt. The gear that usually goes is the ring gear. I don't know the part number, but it looks like the attached image. I think the price for the gear is similar to a good used transmission, which would save you a lot of messy work.

Yes, I will definitely investigate. The dealer only sells the transmission as a unit....lists for $970!!!!! The ring gear itself is available on eBay.

A helpful hint, if it's obvious, my apology: you have to remove the entire wiper assembly: the transmission is fastened from behind!

Has the arm pulled itself out of the retaining notch, small Allen bolt fits in a recess from memory.

DO NOT get a shorter blade, DO NOT get one from a junk yard
Fix the problem now, it's NOT going to get better. Your rubber teeth on the gear are toast. You will be left driving one day with no wiper because the teeth are crumbling. If you get a replacement used wiper assembly, you're going to have the same thing you have now...... a used wiper assembly.
Buy the gear piece, it's not that expensive. Get a new motor while you're at it, or you'll have to do the whole job over again once your motor gets old. The gear might cost you $20 or so, a new motor is $115. Figure out how to disassemble the wiper assembly, get all the old grease out of there and use sylglide (NAPA) or other quality grease. Lube everything up properly and reassemble. |
