w124 diesel value these days?

What's a decent w124 diesel worth these days? I've put a lot of time into my 92 300d and have another project car coming along and want to sell this in the next couple months after I drive it. Just curious. I was thinking $2500 is a good deal. I want to try to sell it to a forum member when I'm done before I sell it to a craigslist idiot who won't take care of it. I don't care about seeing my money back, but not for my time and effort to go to waste who sees at as an "old benz beater".

Immaculate MB tex interior. Paint is ok, I'll buff it and I think it should come back. 188k drivetrain with a 300k chassis that I repaired rust on in the wheel wells & control arm mounts. The rockers are in pretty good shape.

I'd rate a 6/10 cosmetics and when I'm done it will be a 10/10 mechanical.

I think it depends on where you are located in the country, and also whether it's sold by a dealer vs private party. Here in the PNW I've never seen them priced that cheaply. I actually think forum members here undervalue these cars compared to what the general public might pay.

Yeah I see them listed for 4k on Craigslist. I just would never pay that, but I guess that xoesnt mean someone else wouldn't.

No fixed pricing rules really. Mechanically that model and combination is desirable by many. There is rust and there is rust. If you reside In the rustbelt and buy in it. The buyer decides on their level of acceptance.

In an ideal world we would only buy our cars in a rust free area of the country. There are many complications to doing so and generally will result in a lot more money being spent. If you reside in the rustbelt.

A friend beat me to a salvage title '90 300D 2.5 black on black tex with working AC and spare long block and transmission was asking $2000 but I know it went for less. I forget the miles but way under 300K or I wouldn't have been interested. My SD's been on Craigslist for almost a month at $1800. A half dozen inquiries, no one's come to see it.

Hopefully these cars still mean something where you are :/

Car prices are weird. IF (and that's a big IF) it lights someone's fire they'll pay stupid money and not even know why. An example - the wife of a friend of mine fell in love with a silver, 4 door Pontiac (was that a?) Sunbird, maybe 1980 or so - this was in about '84. She thought it was "sporty" because it had a tape stripe down the side. No accounting. She overpaid by a significant amount when the salesman picked up that she was excited by the little crapbox.

Not saying your car isn't a nice one, just that it's hard to tell what will blow someone's skirt up. Mom would ONLY buy red cars! All I can do is wish you the best of luck in finding that person who just can't live without it.

How do you document the 188K drive train? If you can $2500 is fair in my opinion, but won't go fast at that price.
PS What needs to be done to "make it done"?

In my area a w124 diesel is always over priced. It takes a long time to find one in good condition at a no nonsense offer.

At $2,500 they are almost always trashed. At $1,000 they don't even run half the time.

I saw one in a nice condition for $3,500, but I'd nitpick everything wrong with the car to reel the person down to $2.000-$2,500 if I were interested in buying it.

Don't forget to grease the screw and threads on the spring compressor.

LOL I turned down a $5000 offer a few months ago. You'll have to do better than that. But for a regular run of the mill 87 sedan in typical 30 year old car condition, $1000.

I bought the car with the 180k drivetrain off a member of here. It was for sale at one point in the for sale section. Plus I'd provide a compression test results. What needs to be done is stupid odds and ends like connecting the a.c. and replacing the flex discs and center support bearing. Tie rod ends as well.

Typical condition is usually pretty ratty. Mines a lot better than that. 5k? I'd take it and run. 5 speed or not, it's hard to get that money for a w124 diesel.

I think $2500 is a very fair price. I paid $1600 for my W123 3 years ago, and it's a clunker. I mean, I love Betsie, but I can take a step back and see her for the hooptie she is. Exterior 5/10, interior 4/10, mechanical 6/10. I didn't feel like I overpaid for it.

This is in Alaska though, were these cars are not all that available. Don't know how the situation is where you live, but in a mechanical 10/10 W124 for $2500, I'd certainly be interested.
