Non-clutched alternator OM606.910

Hi folks,

I have the opportunity to swap out my non clutched alternator with a a clutched version from a later W210 OM606.962.

Visually they both look the same but is there any special electronics involved to engage/dis-engage the clutch, similar to say an a/c compressor?

Thanks,

No, its a one way clutch so its a purely mechanical device.

Belt tensioner saved, not sure about p/s pump, needs further scrutiny.

How is the harmonic balance held on, one large nut at huge torque me - thinks, are they not balanced to the engine?

I seem to remember the one on 910 had small holes drilled at various points indicating some form of balancing.

Okay, just a quick side-by-side check before installing the larger, W210 alternator.

Although larger, the dimensions appear to be the same, pulley, bolt alignment ect but clearly the 210 unit has a different rating, one is 90amp the other 115amp will this cause problems swapping over?

PS, made in Blighty

It shouldn't be a problem, they're interchangeable. Just make sure to use a clutch pulley with it.

Cheers, the clutch pulley is already fitted so re-fit mounting bolts plus two nut connectors - good to go?

That's interesting, didn't know the rev counter worked from an alternator feed.

on your car the rev counter works from the rpm sensor that is bolted to the side of the bellhousing on the engine, it reads the 144 teeth of the flywheel.

really old VW and volvo diesels rev counter worked off the alternator windings, not this car.
