Those cheap Chinese axles are beginning to sound better and better! And cost less than an expander and a dozen boots? Meanwhile, my 3M 5200 coated boots soldier on ;)

I just yesterday received from Amazon, four Dorman 03680 universal CV boot kits. Although the packaging looks different, the boots look the same. I have the Astoria Flexx Boot tool, and it fits over the stock cans. From the listing:

The Homo-kinetic axles are impossible to take apart by the DIYer, so a cone or boot gun is needed to stretch the boots over the cans. An Annular axle can be disassembled, and the boot/s can be installed right on the axle. Factory German boots will NOT stretch over the cans of Homo-kinetic axles. However, they will work on Annular axles just fine. |

Looking at the packaging and instructions, I see a problem. On the card in the package it says: "installation requires removal of the CV joint". However, in the installation instructions, it shows an "On-the-car tool" being used with a cone to install the boot without removing the joint. Although the instructions show the boot stretching over the joint, I am a little leery about using the Astoria boot gun with these boots.

I have not read that even the stock boots you can get from Mercedes are made in Germany. The Stock Motor Mounts from Mercedes are made in Turkey by another company Phoenix (Lemforder boxes the Phoenix mounts under their name and grinds off the Mercedes logo on the Mount). |

Is the inside diameter of the cone large enough to slide over the Cans? I ended up using and Astro Pneumatic Cone to install the Dorman Boots on mine. It comes with Steel Tongs that are kind of not so good. It would take some time to smooth the inner surface of the tong as it scratches up the cone. I used just the cone by itself. The ID of the cone was too tight and I scraped and sanded it larger. The when installed on the cans the cone came up 1/4" sort of the rolled crimp on the came which made it less smooth of a job to slide the boot over the can. Let us know if the plastic tongs work well. |

Thanx guys ! .
Back in the day German rubber was *very* stiff but stretched over 50 %, necessary on some jobs . |

Envision a hole the size of a quarter expanding to a size that would allow a softball to pass through with plenty of extra clearance. The Astoria boot will do that. |
Ah, HA ! .
