If you were forcing the wheels back and forth hard and levering the control arms w/ a long pry bar, and saw no movement anywhere, then seems the shop was wrong that everything was "loose and/or worn". Shops make money by crying Chicken-Little, though strange they didn't want to fix all these imagined problems.
