S/W124 did you know thread..

Only have one 'did you know'..

Did you know the steering wheel on S/W124's is partially offset to the left on RHD cars?

I only discovered this after taking mine for 4 x wheel alignment at one of those laser centers, chap pointed this out while bracing the steering wheel, always thought they were flat to the driver.

This photo of RR Phantom clearly shows the wheel offset.

I always thought most manufacturers did that so in a crash if all else fails your chest is only partially crushed.

Yup, offset to the seat position, i.e not parallel to the prop running center.

Not sure why, maybe the seat is offset too?

the LHD cars are the exact opposite, the wheel is slightly towards the right (very slight)

Maybe the offset ensures the column buckles. Maybe there’s that much tolerance stack.

Did you know the W124 accessory catalog included bespoke folding bikes that fit neatly in the trunk side pockets.

Did you know, that in order to minimize the risk that other manufacturers' new models would detract from the impact of the new w124s, Stuttgart did not announce the cars at the 1984 Frankfurt Show? Instead they were shown to the press at a special launch in Spain at the end of November 1984 and deliveries began early in 1985.

I have seen the custom jerry cans, but never folding bikes (him/hers?), very cool.

Jerry can although probably not exclusive to the 124

sixto, I remember looking at one of those MB drawings showing driver positioning, if viewed from the top the 124 tapers to the front, so the actual steering wheel may in fact be in line, straight forward?
