Primer pump question

I changed out the fuel filter in my 1981 300D this weekend. When I tried to use the primer pump it didn't seem to work. I was under the impression that you unscrewed it slightly and then pumped it. I unscrewed it as far as it would turn and it still would not pump. Am I doing it incorrectly or is this a sign that the primer pump is bad? By the way it appears to be the old style pump, but the top is metal rather than plastic like the pictures I have seen. Maybe I will just swap it out for the new style pump.

The new black type does not need to be unscrewed, just press on it.

I replaced my old style one recently too and thought the new pump was not working. The new type of pump is just much easier to pump. To double check that it is working loosen the big bolt that holds the spin-on filter in place, pump the primer and look for fuel dribbling around the filter.

Yeah, its not the new style, but it looks a little different than the other old style I have seen (the top is metal not plastic.) The problem that I have is that it doesn't pump in and out, I loosened it as much as I could and it stil doesn't pump. I assumed that after I unscrewed it I would be able to pull out on it and pump it in and out, but it doesn't budge.

Unfamiliar with what you describe, yet should unscrew. Have you opened a vent of some sort, as per bgkast? Post pics? Good luck.

I've never seen such a pump either.

The old style ones you usually have to unscrew, pull towards you, push down to pump, pull back up, push down to pump...etc...

Replacing them can be a PAIN. It took me 3 hours, a dremel, brake cleaner, and a vice grips wrench to get it off our 300D. I finally tried spraying the base (all that was left at that point) over and over with shots of brake cleaner and blowing on it to evaporate it quickly and thus supercool the metal of the primer pump. Well, it worked, I grabbed it with the wrench after doing thatm, turned, and *pop*, it came loose quite easily. Ahh, the joys of thermodynamics.

They wouldn't have helped you anyway. Vice grips would provide a stronger grip. Somebody must have used a cheater bar to put yours on!

blkntancj - you may want to replace the primer with the updated black type.

I thought I was the only one who had a hard time. I used a lil pair of vice grips. Took probably 40 minutes of struggle to get it off. I was just about to give up for the day when it all of a sudden just loosened. Of course I nicked a fuel line and had to drive around a couple days with diesel leaking everywhere till the dealer got the part in.

blkntancj, did the pump work before you changed the fuel filter? I've had to tug a bit at times - when I forget to soak down the plunger with WD-40 once a year. Keeps the "leather" wet.

This is the first time I have tried to use the primer pump as this is the first time I have changed the filters (I've only put 1000 miles on it since I purchased it), so I don't know if it worked before. What was described above is what I was expecting, unscrew, pull out, push in, pull out push in, etc to pump it. But when I unscrew it it won't pull out, I haven't yanked on it too hard because I didn't want to bust it if I was doing it wrong. I'll try spraying it with PB Blaster and see if that helps. It would be nice to get the air purged out of the system. Thanks for the help.
