5 speed 190d for cheap. Worth it?
If I can get rhe car for the right price, is it worth buying? It's under a grand and drivable. I'd cut the car up for parts and use the 5 speed for my 87. It's a 2.5td.
With the market as crappy as it is, do you guys think I could make my money back in part out? Just looking for some advice.

That's a rare car / engine. Small market that appreciates them, but the parts for that engine can be hard to find. Sounds like this car is converted from auto to stick, and not a factory-made stick?

If it has a limited slip rear I'd buy the limited slip carrier from you (there's my encouragement )

2.2 I assume? It'll all bolt up to your 2.5t but you might want to invest into a larger flywheel and disk.

I love driving my 5speed 190... what’s wrong with it? Why part it out? I mean, sure, the turbo with a 5 speed would be fun... but if you have the 2.5 NA vehicle, it is a blast to drive...
If it’s the 2.2 ... well the trans in that car is pretty weak. I don’t think I would want it behind a turbo motor.

Do you homework on the gear ratios in regard to the differential. I believe that if you put that 5 speed in a 87 300d you wont be able to use 5th gear until 75mph plus. 1st gear is really tall as well. Not much power on take off.
I have experience with that tranny going into an auto 190e and that was the case. You need a 3.46 diff to do it properly. Good luck finding that. |

If the body is sound (not rusty or bashed in) and no other problems than suspension issues, the car may be worth more complete than parted out in the sense that you can sell it (1) all at once and (2) more quickly. The market for the rare parts is small and getting smaller, so you may be able to get more $$ in the long run, but it may be a _very_ long run, like years long.

Having swapped the auto to stick in my '87 190DT, using the auto's rear diff takes some getting used to. This page has a chart I'm sure many members here are familiar with, gives you an idea of the different final drive ratios that were in these cars: w201 differential ratios | Mercedes-Benz turbo. In that 190D, you would have the 3.64 diff David mentioned, which is really the optimal for the swap. All depends what you want to do. If swapping the stick into your 190DT is a goal, I'm not sure you'd find a better donor car. But as previously said, the 190D with a stick shift in itself is a rare car. Either way, just buy the thing |

The entire drivetrain will fit in the 124 body. You will have to deal with driveshaft length...
Diff fits... I may do the same to my wagon... one of them anyway... And I'll be putting my 2.2 5 speed behind my 2.5T 190... FUN!
