Driver window won't go up

I am on the road and put my driver side window down. It will not go back up. Likely the switch? I tried pulling on it to assist it but that does not seem to be the problem. It is not bound up in the channel.

Ha! Just got it fixed temporarily. I pulled the center console up and swapped out the plug in wire from the front to the rear switch and the window went up. I guess the switch went bad or is dirty.

I'd swap switches to make a quick check. If that fails I'd pull the door panel and visually check the condition of the regulator. Next check the motor by running wire(s) from the battery.

Check the right, rear window. It shares the fuse with the driver's window. When both don't work, it is usually the fuse (a or b fuse, look at label sheet on cover). Not that the fuse is blown, more commonly the silver fuses the factory installed corrode at the tips, dropping the voltage. They first stop working in the "going up" direction since that takes more current. Ditto for your sunroof. Sandpaper will fix it quick, but eventually solution is replace all w/ gold fuses. By switching to the rear connector, you are using a power feed wire from the other fuse (a or b).

Oops, I just realized you didn't bother to describe your car when asking a car question. I must apologize that my answer may be totally bogus for your car. I speak of my 1984 & 85 300D's.

It is an '85 300D. Thanks for all of the suggestions. The voltage drop issue is interesting. I will check that out.

Sometime you will have the door card off. Clean and lube very lightly the channels. The same goes for the sun roof.

I have the lubricant for the sunroof rail. Do the window channels take a special lubricant? The sunroof lubricant is designed to not attract and hold dirt, if I remember correctly.

Sounds like silicone spray lubricant, which you can get at hardware stores, either general purpose or labeled for garage doors.

My car has eight relays in one module that control the windows. I had the same problem (goes down but not up) and cleaning the relay contacts solved the issue. Does your model have such a module?

LOL, a fool and his money will soon part. I bought a one ounce thimble of MB sunroof lube for ~10 bucks so I'm working the fool part pretty hard these days.

If someone would reveal the best lube for a window regulator I'd be delighted. The interior is removed from my car and the regulators are greased with white lithium right now. Unless someone tells me something better that's what I'm going with.

Certainly the fools who run to the M-B dealer for every little part, though I have heard their free coffee is often good. White lithium grease is probably still the best choice for window regulators. I usually use whatever I have in the garage. I often use lube's for bicycles - wheel bearing grease, chain oil, ... since for wet environments, thus "should work".

I just went through all of my window regulators and went back and forth with what lube to use. I only had the car for two days and one motor died by my own hand. From what I could tell it died from massive resistance caused by the old dried up grease in the tracks. Before lubrication it of course ran better bone dry. Made me wonder if everything was operating in a more teflon type of dry lubricant would it do better long term. I packed the metal on metal gears with NLGI #2 grease, sprayed the tracks with 3M dry silicone spray lube then sprayed a coat of lithium grease. Also added a section of plastic film to the bottom of the windows which basically lays over the whole mechanism when the windows are up to hopefully prevent washout from water passing through.

I had all four regulators out and cleaned them on the bench. Two had broken slides so I replaced them and lubed the tracks, gears and semicircular piece with white lithium grease. I used too much according to others on this thread but I'm still weeks away from covering the doors so I can tidy that up.

The tracks were filled with black grease that had gotten dry and formed large buildups. It's no wonder the little plastic buttons broke.

I've replace all four of the outside window seals so I don't think much water will find its way in the doors. I also clean the inside, bottom of the doors and made sure the drains were unobstructed.

It's a good idea to use a silicone based grease on the window slides and tracks. Lithium or petroleum greases will turn gooey when exposed to moisture and will harden over time. The silicone grease is non-reactive with water and does not become gooey with age. Over time it will dry out, but will leave a slippery silicone lubrication layer behind.

Sunroof grease is a good choice if you have some handy. If not, get some water faucet grease from Home Depot. A little pot goes a long way, that stuff is slick! Basically the same stuff as sunroof grease, but slightly heavier in weight.
