83 240D - headlights & fogs out, momentary OK

Somehow, the headlights on my 83 240D have failed. All that works is the momentary hi beams when you pull back on the left stalk, with the engine running. (I had to drive home with that held on for the whole trip the other night).

My first guess was fuses, but all look good. When I turn on the headlights, I do get dash and button lights. I do NOT get any voltage at fuses 11 & 13 with a test probe.

I don't think this car uses a headlight relay, right?

I have replaced the stock sealed beam headlights with the h4 type, and these have been working fine for a year at least. I really don't think I have bad bulbs, but I've not checked that yet.

Ideas??

It might very well be the switch in the stalk. On my 300D my headlights will sometimes go out completely and I have to wiggle the stalk to make them come on again. The headlights and fogs turn off as you’re pulling the switch towards you to turn the brights on, and that’s where your problem might be.

Mine had a bad headlight switch that was making the headlights do some silly things.

If you are NOT getting power to the fuses, then I guess the problem is in switches or somewhere in the fuse box.

I just had the same problem. I was going crazy cleaning wires and probing everything, and then I just took the fuses out and put them back in again for the third time and now it's on. Maybe these old fuse boxes need some extra wiggles sometimes.
