Can anyone tell me how to remove the 4 speed manual transmission shifter? I was wondering; if it will come out the console with just removing the console cover or not? I was hoping not to have to remove the whole console to remove for repair.

Its been a while but I think you can remove the boot then unfasten the screws holding it down and pull up. The rods below have to be removed too.

Remove the boot at the bottom, which may be glued to the console, unclip the linkages after noting locations, and remove a bolt at each corner holding it in. It should come free and pull up from there.

I'm running that shifter in Mutt the Race Truck. IIRC, you will have to remove the console to pull it out. But let me ask - are you sure the shifter needs work? My experience was that once the linkage bushings were replaced all was well but I don't know if that's typical.

There is a sizable plastic bushing in the shifter which fails after 20 or 30 years. But checking the shift rod bushings first is a good idea since they fail after a while also.

Nah, switched one a couple months back. You might have a plastic or zebrano coverplate to pull up, but it was 4 bolts, 3 clips the boot and out. Once the boot it up, you should see a hole bigger than the shifter assembly.

Thanks for the response on the shifter removal. It comes right out of the console in place. There was a bracket for the emergency flasher there, but it doesn't pose any problems. Got my new parts in it, which can be a challenge on the bushing. It is a whole different drive with the shifter now. Goes into reverse very smooth. Thanks for the response again! I had read about the genuine MB shift booth Hunter had posted once. They are so much different than the jobbers out there. I don't think even in very cold, that it will prove to be any issue. It feels as soft any pliable as leather to me, and nice appearance.
