Speedo cable replacement

Yesterday I attempted to replace the speedo cable on youngest sons 1982 240d. The old cable came out without any trouble, came out with a moderate tug at the transmission. I compared the new and old cables, the ends looked the same. The old cable had a rubber seal on the transmission end that I removed and placed on the end of the new one. Here’s the problem I can’t get the new cable pushed in far enough for the retaining bolt to hold it in place. I’ve tried removing the rubber seal and that didn’t help. I have replaced speedo cables on other cars and have never had one not eventually slip in. Is it possible that I need to use something to help push it in?

I guess no one has any suggestions? I wouldn’t ask what seems like a stupid question but I’m not sure why it won’t go in far enough.

You usually have some play in the cable.
On the end that goes into the speedometer, push the flattened part down so that it abuts the cable housing.
Duct tape the cable end to the cable housing...so it is secure and won't move when the other end is inserted into the transmission..

This should give you adequate length of (non-moving) cable at the end going into the transmission.
