found an 87 300d with a broken odometer at 96k from Florida. clean. it's in Connecticut. light hit in driver side fender. bent a little bit. nothing a tree and chain couldn't fix along with a ball perm hammer. guy wants $1600 for it. I offered $700 and was willing to go up to $800. it's clean and in the gorgeous smoke silver with wine interior.

seems like too much for a hit car and is my offer that insulting?

If you are being honest about how much you'll pay for the car then it's more than fair. If he refuses then he's probably an honest man. If he takes half of the asking price he's a crook.

The only insult is making a deal then backing out when the man shows up with the product or money. An honest offer might hurt his feelings but he won't suffer harm.

OP, I think you're being fair. You've got good reason to offer the price you did, and you understand and accept that the seller may not accept your offer.

I disagree that anyone is a crook for asking a higher price than they'd actually accept, even by 2x. Nothing at all wrong with having a price in mind that you will not go below, while at the same time putting a few bucks in your pocket just by asking. The buyer is under zero obligation to pay the higher price, if they find it objectionable.

An insult would be more in your tone than the amount. It depends on whether you say, “It’s worth $700 to me.” or “That pile of cr@p is barely worth $700.” I take it this was an email offer since you didn’t include what the seller said in response.

thanks for the advice guys.. got it for a little above scrap price. I didn't give him an offer at the time of the post but I asked his bottom dollar and he said anything above $150 so I said $200. it was sitting on Facebook for awhile

both parties fulfilling the agreement, it is impossible for one party to keep the agreement (1) or the agreement is amended (2).

Notes:

1. If you hire me to jump over a building any judge will find it impossible for me to fulfill the agreement and make it void. Likewise if someone stole a car you agreed to sell to me it would be impossible to hold you to the deal.

2. An amendment to a contract may proclaim it void if agreed by both parties.

If someone asked me to cancel an agreement on the grounds that they had extraordinary, unforeseen circumstances I would agree to void the agreement. I'm not a monster.

Other than me agreeing to cancel an agreement I have no respect for anyone who fails to keep a commitment. That includes welshing on a bet.

No really, please excuse the rudeness of tone. I made a deal with a member here a few months ago and drove 70 miles with cash to finalize the deal and pick up the parts to have the man refuse to sell the one I needed most.

I'm still sensitive and I apologize for being rude and dry. This is no reflection on you and I should not have keyed off and had that emotional outburst.

You said things change in an . I keyed off on this and described the few circumstances in which an agreement may change without anyone being
shown as dishonest. Nothing was directed at you, you've always show a great deal of patients and integrity.

it doesn't smoke.. I did a video call with him. runs quite well. Lifters are quiet and purrs like a kitten from a dead cold start after a month.

Even if I put $700 into it, I'd be coming out golden. I'm excited to go get it. I'll post some pics of the damage and as I go along and fix it.

If I could go back.

Several years back I had two w126’s for sale. One was an ‘87 300SDL and the other was a ‘91 350SDL. Both ran, but the ‘91 had damage to the front. It also had a remanufactured engine in it. I was selling them as a package. Anyway, I had so many calls about the cars and everyone decided to come see it on the same day. I specifically told each prospective buyer that the first one to put cash in my hand would get the cars. Several came by and looked and wanted to “think about it.” I’ve done the same thing before. One man came from just a few minutes up the road and I informed him that someone was coming to look at the cars and they were driving several hours to do so. I informed him that he should be prepared with money to buy and I would allow him to inspect the cars if he could get there before the other person. Both were informed that I would not be holding the cars and that they would be sold to the first person to put cash in my hand. The local guy arrived and inspected the cars. He was actually looking at them for someone else, his “boss.” He made a few calls and then said his boss wanted them and that he’d be back in a little bit to pay me. I informed him again that someone was on their way to look at the cars and that if he really wanted them then he could pay me something (earnest money)and we’d be good. He just said he’d be back in a little bit. The other guy arrived within a few minutes of the local guy’s departure. He looked at the cars for about 3 minutes and handed out $1800, which was the price I was asking. I took the cash and gave him the titles. As he was walking back to his truck the local guy drove up. He asked, “Did you sell them?” I told him that I did and that’s when he began to cuss and raise his voice. The person who had just bought the cars sat quietly in his truck and watched the situation carefully. I listened to the man for a bit and then he called his “boss” and demanded that I speak with him. After a bit of this nonesense, I told the man that he was given the same opportunity as everyone else and that he needed to leave. He got louder and and threatening. That’s when I reached into my pocket and showed him my home security system. I told him the choice for him to leave had already been made. He just needed to decide on what kind of vehicle he’d leave in. For several days after that his “boss” would call me and threaten me with legal action. I invited him to my home and told him I’d be glad to discuss it with him. That kind of intimidation may work in his part of the country, but not around here. Come to think of it, I wouldn’t have handled it any differently.
