I love those old military training films. They actually explain this very well.

He even says at the end this is only the introduction. At the very end there is a teaser on superheat and sub cooling, so I suspect there may be another in the series that explains this. YouTube user Jeff Quitney has uploaded quite a few of these old mid century civilian and military videos.

They would never get away with the imagery today - making light of indigineous people and 2 hot girls in bikinis.
