1984 300D compatibility with 1981 240D

There’s a 1984 300D at a local yard that’s about to be crushed - engine is still in it but the oil cap has been off for months and I can see rust inside. The dash and a lot of interior is taken but engine, trans, and the trim is mostly intact. Anything really worth taking - and in particular, anything hard to find or expensive that I might be able to take as a backup for my 1981 240D?

And anything else anybody here might want for a very modest (cost of a six pack and up) price? It’s a rusted and faded blueish gray exterior with a blue MBTex interior - oddly enough the driver’s seat is largely tear free and not sags a little but is still there.

May want to have extra door checks if they are good, IIRC they are getting hard to find. Same for window regulators, first aid kit box and glove box door for the lock/latch.

The 240D didn’t come with chrome tail light trim if you’re feeling fancy.

Does your car have a right side mirror?

You might grab the speedometer and rear end to convert your 240 to a different ratio. Should be doable as the land is not extremely hilly there I believe.
I would also grab the rear axles as spares if the boots are still intact. Clearly mark what sides the are off if you do. Also have a quick look to see if there are any replacement parts on the car. That are still pretty new looking.

Some wreckers charge little for low demand parts on an already stripped car. Some think otherwise.

That’s funny about the tail lights trim - I think I’m going to take them and I noticed the chrome. I just bought new tail light gaskets and the only thing about the tail lights that interests me is that maybe the chromed trim from the 84 has better drains than the base from the 81? I’ll check and report back. I had rust develop from either clogged trim drains or a worn gasket on my driver’s side tail light. My car does have both side mirrors, so I’m good there but I just may take the door checks.

Dropping and dissecting the rear end is a little bit out of my league on my own, but I did find the entire cluster (120mph speedo) hidden under a floor mat - it’s gonna be just over $30 with tax, anybody want it for $65 shipped?

Door checks all busted, heavy corrosion damn near everywhere, took off tail lights and side mirrors but woulda been $80-$90 for them and I don’t really need the backups THAT bad - I’d rather still have my cash in hand. Did find a working fuel sending unit though with all three wires taught and slider intact - was FULL of sludge but cleaned out easy enough. Considered taking glow plug relay but forgot it. Left the gauge cluster for somebody who might need/want it.

Sounds like the yard saw $$$ signs on that Benz. There are some yards out there like that. About $25-30/ea would have been a reasonable asking price.

Grab the fuel injectors and the steel fuel lines, and I'd grab the injection pump too even though it won't work in your car. It will have the primer pump, lift pump, and delivery valves and maybe the vacuum shut off valve that all would work on your pump.

Starter and alternator are also nice to have on the shelf as either a good used or rebuildable core. Take to local FLAPS for free testing to make sure they're good.
