'79 240D Balance Disc installation
OK folks
My FSM's are away on assignment. Question: How does one install the balance disc on the crankshaft? It does not fit, although it came from this shaft. Thanks! Stan |

Generically speaking you can get some threaded rod a nut and an appropriate Washer and us that to pull the Crank Hub on.
If it works depends on how much press fit there is and if the threaded rod is of a high grade. If the threaded rod is just mild steel it is not going to work well. The .pdf has the the crank bolt having M18x1.50 threads. A longer bolt that has full threads and a nut would work to press the hub on.

Bring a toaster oven out into the garage, and weld gloves or oven mitts.
Heat balancer to 250F Pull it out, line up the dowel pins visually and be quick about getting it on before it cools and grabs.

And the winning suggestion is....
moon161....
thank you. Over at Research - Why so many OM61X balancer failures? I posted a response here where whunter stated that the balancer would be "too hot"...but did not mention what he considered "too hot". Seal is made with an injection molded plastic intended to be a round heat- as in uncooled engine oil returning to sump. 250° is NOT hot enough to deform the seal, otherwise you would be CONSTANTLY replacing them. Slide balancer home, align dowel pin holes, and cool woth compressed air from the back with air flow specifically aimed toward the spacer. Trying to force the parts can easily result in damage to one or both pieces. If the part could be started in the first place, then it would be a different job. Later Stan |
