Photobucket - replace with what???

Photobucket now wants to charge me to use my pics on the forum. Obviously I am not doing that. Too bad because I have a lot stored on their cloudsite.

What cloud program are you guys using to store and post pics?

imgur.com is the best one that I've found. It's free and easy to use.

Why not just post them on the board?

Exactly. For forums, there is no need to use a photo hosting service. Just upload them to the forum (works here and on BW and most other forums) Then if you want to insert them in the body of your message, use the paper clip up in the menu bar.

Well, for one thing the pics on the forum are always too small. The thing I liked about Photobucket was that I could copy the URL to the forum and get a large and detailed pic.

Cannot do that with the forum's paper clip - as far as I know.

Just sign up for flickr, it's superior to imgur

If you need more detail, take a close up photo. Really, a huge photo is unnecessary 99.9% of the time. All of those sites are designed to make money by planting tracking cookies on visitors. If you block their trackers, they block your photos. So I'm no fan. Bad enough I have to tolerate the Pelican trackers.

You can insert the image directly onto the post by dragging it from the attachments pane into the post body.

Forum will resize it for you!

As we learned with Photobucket, we can't rely on free 3rd parties for hosting. Best to centralize it all here!

x2, inserting the pic inline with the post produces a full size photo in the post. If you do not insert it inline, you only get the small thumbnail at the bottom that readers must click on to enlarge.

There is zero reason to use any external photo hosting... and plenty of reasons not to.

I resize mine to 25% using MS paint. They load easily here and have excellent resolution.

Using an external host does have some benefits, namely making it easier to cross post photos. Only have to upload them once and just link to it at whatever forum/etc. you want to. It's also more convenient for non-members, so they don't have to create an account just to view images.

Plus like some of the others said, the ability to have higher resolution photos is nice. It eliminates the need for post-processing, fiddling around trying to get close up photos, etc.

The forum allows 1500x1500 photos, that's higher resolution that most people's computer screens, so I don't necessarily see that as a meaningful limitation.

Needing to be a forum member to view the photos is a feature. It's by design, to encourage those interested in the content, to register as a participant. I don't see how that's a problem.

But yes, agree on the cross-posting, I guess it saves two or three mouse clicks when posting the same images on multiple forums. But then you're back to the single point of failure problem - 3rd party hosting stops working, and now your pics are broken across multiple different web forums all at once.
