Unicorns. The hippie shop up in Oregon wants $5k just for a 717.400
They're smoking the good stuff, for sure. |

So much the better. I'm the owner. Considering whether its going to be worth the extra effort to install the 5 speed.
its already 4 spd manual. I must admit I cannot find evidence so far of any that exist, though I'm sure they do here and there. Might be fun. The dark blue ones are so dame pretty when they are clean. This isn't the actual one, this one is concours nice |

To someone WANTING the car, 8? 10? But it'll be a hard long road to find a buyer.
Most wanting a wagon would want auto... Did the car come 4 speed stock? If so, then it is na... if not, it depends on the conversion...

I prefer the manual. This one was automatic, normal import to USA. I converted it.
With that overdrive 5th gear it would be a nice highway car even moreso than it is already. Somebody paid 18K for a nice yellow one this month, on Bring a Trailer. That engine is 280K mi. Mine is 50,000 maybe. True it would be a hidous piece of work to find a buyer without good luck. |

x2, not to mention location location location. Is the car is in Timbuktu? Or is it in the United States, near a major airport where a buyer could easily fly in, or near the interstate where a transport company could easily pick the car up?

Issue is the swap from original. If I was in the market and saw it was a swap, I'd keep scanning, even if I wanted a manual. The one that fetched $19,000 was gorgeous and original and well maintained. If you swapped it and like it, keep it. You are likely going to get in the $6000 range, at most for it.

That makes no sense. At all. As someone who has actually done the swap, built and rebuilt the manual transmissions (ahem...) I can tell ya there is no big mystery. The only mystery may be not being afraid of it, The experience of creating something sorta cool and unique is very worthwhile. No need to shy away out of whatever fear it may not be right. Thats a slick thing about Mercedes .... built and machined so sturdy .... get good parts, bolt it together right, slam the hood and forget it. That is what make them fun to work on. Very satisfying, and that satisfaction is based on direct experience. And you guys can zip it when it comes to speaking with authority just cuz it sounds like authority. I sounds hollow.

I'd give $5k if it looked good, no rust, everything worked including AC, seats solid and comfortable. Documented quality parts and if I could live with the car for a day to notice the flaws.
Most at that price require this, that & the other to be repaired. My belief is that if the repairs are so minor, let the PO deal with it and not me. If I fix, the price comes down to compensate for parts and labor.

That's nice, but wasn't what was asked. I can only assume you live in Hawaii or maybe Alaska and that it's not worth the trip.
For any car believed to be worth "above market" you will have folks who want to fly in and see it, and you'll have collectors who fly someone else in to see it, and then hire a transport company to deliver it. Or maybe you only want to sell townies and locals, and get whatever price they are offering? Trade on craigslist for $500 and some sweet tattoo work? I'm thinking so, lol.

Rocket99, don't take it personally on the price. These cars were never a good investment. Don't let your blood, sweat, and tears cloud your estimates.
Hold onto it for another 10 years and you may find the price you're looking to part with, especially at 50k original miles. |
