Would sure love to use a protractor that fits inside an om603 crank pulley. Would make doing a leak down test a lot easier on a diesel.

No need for a protractor. Use a cloth tape measure to measure the circumference. Start at TDC, divide by 3 and make your marks.

It doesn't need to be that difficult, they are finding exact TDC to check injector pump timing. A chalk mark is enough when doing a leak down.
This leak down test is what I've been pushing when diagnosing a combustion to coolant leak or a cylinder with low compression. |

Make a template out of cardboard and protractor and tape it on, with a hole in the middle for the 27 mm socket. I made a permanent one out of a sheet of tin and magnets. Let's see if this photobucket link works.

So,
360/5=72* for a 617 every 60* for 6 cylinder and 90* for 4 cylinder? Would accessing through injector hole or glow plug be preferable when you have no particular reason to remove the GP or Injector except to perform the test? Does removing the hard lines (617) automatically cut the fuel leaving the injection pump or would fuel end up all over the engine bay?

How common is it to have cylinder leakage coming from the crankcase in an OM603? If the bottom end is leaking then things can get expensive and i'll be better off hunting for a used short block.
I'm hoping the leakage is from the air intake and exhaust valves from the head, then I can get the head rebuilt and be fine.
